I use mutt, and have since about June last year. I also found it very
hard to get into using a text-based Linux mail client, and considered
pine as well. I chose mutt for a few reasons, including the fact that it
is very configurable, it is standards compliant, and is quite Speakup
friendly.
I looked at the pine interface, but didn't like it as much. I was also
able to find out more about Mutt than pine, which helped me make my
decision.
It is ultimately up to you, but I do recommend mutt, as you can
configure it to your tastes, and once learnt, it is possible to work
very quickly in it, with the aid of the Speakup review keys, which you
will need to read email.
Hope this helps.

I think you might have a config problem with your mutt. I don't need
speakup review keys to read mail. What situation causes to need the
review keys?

I would rather not listen to the whole screen being read out. It is no
great deal to simply go to the top of the screen with the Speakup review
keys, and go dwon from there. I have a customized header display, so
getting through those is no problem. It also means that if I need to
copy any info quickly from the email while reading, I am able to do so
without having to find the correct line on the screen first.

I use neither Mutt nor Pine. I like NMH personally. If you're looking for something that's a snap to set up or configure then you probably don't want to use NMH unless you're willing to read through some docs to get the setup that you want. I like it because it is great for handling large amounts of mail and great for programming. I like the fact that you can use all the shell functions and utilities to help deal with your mail. So the interface is very simple and yet very complex at the same time. Configuration for the most part is not so bad either so long as you don't intend to alter files that need format strings because NMH's format xstrings are not for those who dislike reading large manpages. On the other hand once you have things set up the way that you like then you're good.

Hi.
This one of those questions where everyone who replys will say the
program I use is best. I think mut is the best.
I like it's features and the ability to reconfigure any part of it that
you don't like into something you do.
Hope this helps.

Well, you asked for opinions, so I'll give mine.
Learn mutt.
You've got some learning to do regardless of whether you choose mutt or
pine. If mutt seems more formidable, perhaps it's only because it's more
powerful.
Again, speaking only for myself, I used to use Pine. I used it for maybe
four or five years. Eventually, I could tired of the four-five
keystrokes it takes to delete a thread. I decided to put up with the
pain of learning a new mail client to gain things like the ability to
delete a thread in one keystroke. There were other reasons, but that was
the one that tipped me into mutt. I am not sorry.
So, if you take up mutt, perhaps the most important blind friendly tweak
is the following in your ~/.muttrc:
set arrow_cursor # use -> instead of hiliting the whole
line
You will need to set a similar function should you choose Pine.
You can get my current .muttrc from my ftp site:
ftp.rednote.net
Once there, you need to:
cd goodies/system/user
Good luck.
