Does anybody know where I can get a download of abcde and any needed
dependencies for fedora? I could only find a suse rpm and anyway I wasn't
sure it was up-to-date. I really like abcde and used it on debian.
Thanks.

Several places. I would suggest ftp.freshrpms.net.

PS: A good way to discover these is to use Google and a search string
like "apt Fedora rpm" Works very well.

I had used fedora rpm but hadn't found anything; will try the url you
suggest. And maybe using "apt" will make a difference.

Hi:
Fedora comes with a package manager called "yum" which provides similar functionality to "apt". I like yum very very
much. It is simple to use and very powerful. There are many yum rpm databases on the net too. Most software
you would ever need you can get by typing:
# yum install package1 package2 package3 ...

The only disadvantage of "yum" is that it is much slower than "apt", because it is written in python. However, it does
not really matter, because the handling of RPMS is performed by the "rpm" program, which runs at full speed... You
might just see that it takes a long time to find dependencies and stuff like that. I use it
on a 300 MHZ machine without any problems, so most people should not have problems either.

What are you trying to do? What is the difference you seek?

On Fedora, apt, yum, and up2date are three separate meta-applications
for managing rpm, but rpm is still at the core. In this it functions
somewhat similarly to dpkg and .deb files on Debian, for instance.

Yum is my current favorite. It's rather yummy.

I do still keep an apt on my system, but only because the Planet CCRMA
repository is not yet yumable.

Yes, I prefer Google these days.

However, since we're on the subject of finding rpms and also of using
rpm management meta-applications like yum, I think it important to
strongly suggest the use of rpmdb.

What is it? It's a rpm packaged database of dependencies. If you've ever
received an rpm error that says I can't install X because you don't have
Y, you'll appreciate rpmdb. If you have rpm db installed, you still get
the above error, but with a critical enhancement. You also get "Suggest
you install package Z to satisfy this dependency."
