I finally got linux up and running.  Do you know of any mp3 players for
linux?

There are several. There is the simple command-line tool mpg321, which also
shows ID3 information. However, it doesn't allow you to move backwards and
forwards in the file. Other players that allow you to do this are mplayer,
which seems to be a popular choice, and one I personally use called Zinf.
