Hi. That error usually means your X server isn't set up. Once you get that solved, you will still need to install festival before you can use Gnome with speech. Hope this helps. It turned out that x didn't like my graphics card. I put in a different one and everything works. It's an s3 trio 64v+...a very common card in the mid 90's. I think the problem was me not configuring x right...I put in a trident microsystems pci card from the same era and it workes fine now.
