I just installed the DECtalk speech deal from fonix and the say
command works fine now. Now, I want to see what it would take to
write middle ware to enable speakup to work with it. What would be
require here?
Also, where are any additional docs for the fonix synth? I'm also
thinking about getting EmacSpeak to work with it and also I would like
to override those built-in abreviations. I don't wnat st to always be
spoken as street!!!
Any ideas?

Hi Steve-and-All: Are you running version 5 from Phonex or running an actual
DDec-talk version like 4.1C, as I am? I think the abbreviations are in
personal.dtu
Other than the example you list, it also says drive instead of doctor when it
reads dr
Good luck with your project

This is DECtalk runtime for linux version 4.61. It seems to be quite
common for these developers of software speech to force those
substitutions down our throats and often, no means to turn them off.
I don't want to hear hp being said as "horse power" when we're talking
about Helit Packard <sigh>.

What version of EmacSpeak must I use in order to do this? Slackware
still uses 18.0; I thought there was something later than that out and
about. Does it mention it specificly or do I use a particular synth
driver that is compatible with it?

Look on the main Emacspeak page (emacspeak.sf.net) under the press-releases
heading - it says quite plainly that Emacspeak supports Fonix DECTalk since
version 17.0.

Look at their list there is some uncertainty if it works well. In
particular there was a note about debian and having trouble with older
versions of gcc.

My understanding was that DECTalk is binary only, so why should it matter
wat gcc you have?

Well to add onto the current thread, I would like to persue
development of middleware or whatever nees be to connect Speakup with
the DECtalk software synth. I'm currently in conversation with some
folks at Fonix to confirm some things about specs anc controling the
synth so from Kirk's point of view or whoever else on the list, what
do I need to glue this stuff together. I think the programmer's guide
from Fonix will cover what I need from their end but not sure yet. So
far, the 'say' command yields pretty decent sound so think if we can
get Speakup to work with this, we'll be off to a gient leap!
If someone else is doing anything already on this, I don't want to
step on any toes but... If not, I'll forge ahead and if so, I'll be
glad to help however I can.
I still think hardware speech is the best way to go but the laptop
experience is much easier with softsynth.
Anyway, look forward to any further comments on this stuff.

Hi. Don't know about problems with older versions of gcc, but the
DEQTalk RTK comes with header files to link it into other programs.
When I compiled the emacspeak server for DEQTalk, I had to use gcc 2.95
instead of gcc 3.3 because I got errors from the DEQTalk headers
during the compile.
I'm running Debian unstable with the latest updates.
Hope this helps.

Yah, I reall hate that when one is more or less forced to use an older
version of the base compiler. I do get the feeling that some of the
recent changes to GCC have been problematic however. I don't know
enough about the low level details to convert header files or whatever
to make it more compatible with later versions. That's another
problem with using precompiled libraries like this. If you had the
source, you could simply recompile the whole shibang and hopefully
clear up such problems.

Hi. I use the DEQTalk software synth with emacspeak 17.0. The
emacspeak package includes a server for the DEQTalk.
I also use the synth with the emacspeak server with yasr.
Hope this helps.
