Hi all.
I've decided to setup gnome on my play box, mostly because I was lazy,
and didn't feel like compiling festival under slackware, and as I
hoped, there were binary festival packages already available for
debian, so I installed that.
Anyway, I seem to have everything installed (gnome and dependencies,
gnopernicus and dependencies, xfree86-common and dependencies,
ETC.). When the system starts, I'm told that gdm is being started, and
then I get my standard login prompt. Then, something like this comes
up:
missing display, cannot find console dialogue
I'm not sure if that's the exact text, since it's not on the screen for me
to cut and paste here, but it's close to what it actually says.
Could someone please enlighten me as to what I'm missing?

Hello. Did you by any chance start the X server? Dounds to me like its not
started or perhaps its not configured correctly.

No. There seems to be no xf86config program in debian like there is in
slackware, so I'm not sure how to get an x server setup.
I assumed debian already did this when it configured the
xfree86-common package.

No, it doesn't do it automatically. Use
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
to set it up.

When you talk about running gnome under debian are you using speakup or
gnopernicus to do this. I am asking cause I want to experiment with X
applications.

Thanks. It turned out I didn't have xserver-xfree86 and xserver-common
installed. So, I installed that, and configured xserver-xfree86 per
your instructions below. However, I still have the same problem. I've
looked at XFree86.0.log, and the end result is that the server fails
to start, but even though some things fail to open according to the
log, it looks to me like things should still start.
Since I am not familiar with what is normal in a XFree86.0.log, could
someone please allow me to send them privately my XFree86.0.log and my
XF86config4 file, with the hope that someone could explain to me what
I'm missing, and what's going on?

Hi. Your X isn't working. Check out /var/log/XFree86.0.log to find out
why.
