A friend of mine received this notice. Does it mean what it seems
to mean?

Chuck

Dear LondaM,

Thank you for being a Red Hat Network customer.

This e-mail provides you with important information about the upcoming
discontinuation of Red Hat Linux, and resources to assist you with your
migration to another Red Hat solution.

As previously communicated, Red Hat will discontinue maintenance and
errata support for Red Hat Linux 7.1, 7.2, 7.3 and 8.0 as of December
31, 2003. Red Hat will discontinue maintenance and errata support for
Red Hat Linux 9 as of April 30, 2004. Red Hat does not plan to release
another product in the Red Hat Linux line.

With the recent announcement of Red Hat Enterprise Linux v.3, you'll
find migrating to Enterprise Linux appealing. We understand
that transitioning to another Red Hat solution requires careful planning
and implementation. We have created a migration plan for Red Hat Network
customers to help make the transition as simple and seamless as
possible. Details:

****************
If you purchase Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS or ES Basic before February
28, 2004, you will receive 50% off the price for two years.[*] (That's two
years for the price of one.)

****************
In addition, we have created a Red Hat Linux Migration Resource Center
to address your migration planning and other questions, such as:

* What are best practices for implementing the migration to Red Hat
  Enterprise Linux?

* Are there other migration alternatives?

* How do I purchase Red Hat Enterprise Linux WS or ES Basic at the price
  above?

* What if my paid subscription to RHN extends past April 30, 2004?

****************

Find out more about your migration options with product comparisons,
whitepapers and documentation at the Red Hat Linux Migration Resource
Center:

  http://www.redhat.com/solutions/migration/rhl/rhn

Or read the FAQ written especially for Red Hat Network customers:

Sincerely,

Red Hat, Inc.

Hi
Well, I'm no RH insider, so a few details may have escaped me. But essentially this means that the product named Red Hat Linux will be discontinued as
the message states. Red Hat Linux is now Red Hat Fedora Core, which is due for official release later this month, starting at version 1.0. Fedora core is now
a project, not a product. The project has a more open development model, where many more people can contribute to it. However, this does mean that it is
no longer a retail product like red hat linux was, but it is still essentially the same system. For more info, visit:
http://fedora.redhat.com/
HTH
P.S. If anyone's installed fedora core, please write me, I got it installed but am having some major issues in the areas of bootup and networking. Not sure
whether this latest beta is broken or if I screwed something up during installation, since kickstart doesn't seem to work exactly the same.

I think this is due to the fact that the fedora core is more community based than redhat Linux. Redhat has been faulted for
placing packages in the install that were proprietary pieces of software. Thank you for telling me about this, I've thought about
switching to fedora anyway, and this means I'm going to completely errase my iso images of redhat linux if it's no longer going to
be current technology.
Thanks again,
Jes and Harley

Yes that is correct. They are stopping their support of those OSs but
it's no big deal at all. Just use fadora.

Take care,

Hi Jacob,
Redhat is also incorperating redhat interprise Linux in to their line of retail products. Which aparently from this message, they
will put a price stamp on the product and won't make it available for download, accept maybe as a trial version. Hope this
helps...Jes.

Hi
As far as I know, rh enterprise linux has always been like that. The only time I've seen it for download is in its beta versions, which I think RH still has on their ftp
site.

It looks like a sales pitch to me.

Short answer ...

The consumer level Red Hat Linux is no more--at least not by that name.
Red Hat Linux and Fedora Core have merged.
It is now called Fedora Core.

I will continue to call it Red Hat Fedora Core in a vain hope of
avoiding just such confusion as I seen on this list tonight.

To learn more look at htt:

http://www.fedora.us
http://fedora.redhat.com

Meanwhile, Red Hat Corp continues to offer industrial strength
distribution and support--which is what they seem to be selling in the
message you forwarded.

This is either - really from Redhat and means they're trying to force
you into the paid product or it is someone like SCO or other bent on
undermining the markket position of a Linux world leader.

Either way, not good.

GA!

Hi, You won't need to buy redhat enterprize linux if you don't want to.
The new version will be freely downloadable and if it is not then that
is a violation of the gpl. bye On Mon, 3 Nov 2003, Jacob Schmude wrote:

Hi
Actually, that's not true. The gpl states that anyone may charge money for a product, as long as the source is distributed with it. The gpl doesn't say that the
product has to be freely downloadable, it says that the source must be provided and that the user has the right to modify it. Many people seem to interpret this
as the product must be available at no cost, which is not true. RH is completely entitled to charge money for enterprise linux and not make it freely
downloadable, so long as they provide the source code with it. As the FSF says: think free speech not free beer.

The way I interpret the GPL is that anybody has the right to give somebody
else a copy of the software. That is, if Redhat Enterprise edition is
licensed under the GPL, then somebody could buy a copy, and copy it off
for their friends. Those friends could make copies, etc. In other words,
it makes legal what we often call software piracy. The GNU web site makes
clear that they don't like the term "pirate" and that forbidding the
sharing of software is as wrong as forbidding the sharing of a recipe.
That's what they mean by freedom as I understand it.

Well, yes, free speech and not free beer.

And, RH Enterprise won't be downloadable, at least not as far as I'm
aware. I'd be extremely surprised.

What will be downloadable is Fedora Core 1.0.

though I thought that fee was only to cover distribution costs. I
don't think the price of redhat enterprise is just to cover the
distribution costs.

Hi
What the price covers is irrelevant, be it distribution costs or the software itself. They're still perfectly within their rights to charge whatever price they see fit, and
since they're the ones who put the distro together, they have the right to not make enterprise downloadable if they so choose. What they can't stop, unless
they've developed proprietary software to mix into enterprise linux, is someone else putting it up for download if they wish to.
