Hello,
How can I insert control characters like formfeeds in a file using an
editor like vi orpico?

Thanks
Chris

Chris,

I use "ed" for chores like that. Use the "s" (substitute) command
and enter the actual control character as part of the replacement
string. You want control-l for form-feed.

I am not sure about vi, but emacs has very nice facilities for that
-- the normal key binding is control-q and then the character such as
control-l. Also, you can type any octal digits after the control-q
and they will go in.

Thanks to both Chuck and John. I remember back to the dos days when you
had to hold down the alt key and punch in the digits on the numeric keypad.

Of course if you could use edlin, you could use control-v followed by
those digits too for the same effect.
