This is weird. The author of Speak Freely, John Walker, seemed to have
gained a revived interest in his program, set up a web forum, and the
activity on the mailing list was up. Now, he's declaring it dead as of
January 15, 2004. He put the announcement up at :
http://www.fourmilab.ch/speakfree/eol

I guess it's up to the Speakup community to maintain our version and keep
adding features. The only question is whether we should try and merge in
the 7.6A code into our version? It has some improvements like supporting
GPG as well as the older PGP for encryption, but our version has the audio
blending feature as well as the nice features for the Speakup reflector.
It's the only voice client that works on both Windows and Unix/Linux that
I know of.

Hi,

Ventriloe is another one that flies under both major os'. So, if you decide
not to continue developing your distro of speak freely, users won't be
totally stuck.

Insidentally, I didn't know speak freely worked under windows. Where would
one go about getting the windows version? Unless the blind linux comunity
is going ventriloe, in which case I'm there, smile.

The Windows version is at http://www.fourmilab.ch/speakfree/windows. I
didn't say I was developing Speak Freely, but some members of the Speakup
community have made a modified version that has some features specifically
for teh Speakup reflector and blends audio when two or more people talk at
once so you can understand them instead of the horrible back and forth
sound that you hear in the normal version.

Hello all,
As far as I know, there is no linux client.
I run the linux server, and usually stay pretty up-to-date on
developements, however I may have missed something.

Is there even a ventrilo client for linux? Last time I checked there
was only a server...I've used the winblows client a bit and really
don't like it. it doesn't have a lot of speakfreely's features but is
slightly more luser freindly then speakfreely.

Right, servers for other platforms are available, clients for windows will
be joined by others.

Where can I find a Ventriloe client for Linux? My friend said he looked all over for one and couldn't find one. It's
pretty much they only application that is holding him back from using Linux exclusively.

ew of my friends and I were talking about reverse engineering Ventrillo so
that I could work on a Linux client. However, since the protocol is
unfortunately proprietary the Linux client would ve to be continually
modified. Its just sad to see that there is a server that will work on most
Unix flavors, but not a client.
