Hi Kenny. Well that command doesn't work, so the package isn't installed. I
believe that package was lost during my first failed recover attempt. I will
have to run apt-get check when I get back to the machine. I also used pump with
the ifup script. Speaking of which, do the ifup/ifdown scripts come with the
pump pkg? Bc when I did the initial install who knows how long ago, those
scripts used pump. I know this because when I modified something in pump.conf,
the changes would take effect once I ran ifdown/ifup to reconfigure eth0. So
for now at least I am looking at reinstalling pump and dhclient.

Hi. The ifup/ifdown scripts are part of the netbase package.
Dhcp-client and pump should conflict with each other because they both
provide a DHCP client. the ifup/ifdown scripts should behave the same
way whether you are using dhcp-client or pump.

Hi all. Well I finlaly got my box back up yesterday. It seems to be humming
away smoothly for the time being. I do however anticipate that the drive will
fail within the next year, because it does make some squeaking noises at times.
However thankfully, nothing hear to what happened about 5 days ago.

I wouldnt gage drive failure by noise...it's not accurate. I have drives
that have been makin g squeaking noises for years and still havent failed.

Hi all. Well finally got my system booting last night again. Hwever I still
don't have networking, and when I did ifdown eth0 I go ta messsage about
couldn't find /var/run/dhclient.pid. Does anyone know what packages I should
reinstall to get this working again i.e., pump? Which package specifically
contains the ifup/ifdown scripts? I know that there was no typ of net package
in the potato base system, has this changed since the latest stable version?
Thanks!

Hi. The file it's complaining about is part of dhcp-client. I just
checked my Woody system. the file exists on my system, but it was created on
Jan 4. I can't remember whether It was created because I used dhcp when
I first booted the system, or it was created when I stopped using dhcp
after boot. Hopefully, someone who knows more will jump in and tell us.
What happens if you type
dhclient eth0
Worning! that example assumes your nic is eth0. If it isn't substitute
the corect value. If dhclient still exists, you shouldn't need to
re-install anything.
