Hello I have a seller on 501 megahertz processor in a computer that has
about 11 gigs free on a hard drive currently assigned to no partition. This
computer has 256 megs of ram and an integrated video card that uses 8 megs
of ram off the computer its self. I downloaded the Official Red Hat Linux
x86 Installation Guide but when I looked through it all I got was the hard
drive requirements and the fact that you had to boot off a cd or disk. I
also got a link to the compatible hardware list but looking through this
list or searching red hat sight didn't give me the amount of ram or
processor speed I need. If you guys could tell me if my computer will run
red hat in consol and x-windows I'd appreciate it. Also I'd like to know
what the minimum system requirements are since I may have the opportunity to
by some older 200/300 megahertz machines and this way could run it with out
having to duel boot. Appreciate and info.

Uhh. If you can't get GNU/Linux running on that...I'll eat my
hat. Which I won't have to do...I like my hat...No problem with that
hardware.
200/300MHz processors are plenty fast enough. You can get a GNU/Linux
system on a 386...but...any ol' Pentium will do nicely. 32MB is nice,
64MB is nicer, and depending on how creative you wanna be, you can get
a system into a fairly small space...but any system with a P2 or P3
likely has at least a couple gig HDD...plenty of room. I believe
official spec still says at least a 386, at least 8MB RAM (may require
16MB these day)...drive space is pretty variable depending on what you
want. Still, with the hardware you propose, you ought not have any
problems.
BTW, don't knock those "old" systems. ... Both desktops here are "old"
(a P2/450...or is it a P3/450? Anyway) and a AMD K6-2/350. Laptop is
the newest and fastest machine I own...I actually also have a P133 I
want to put GNU/Linux on, but not sure about the four-disc changer I
have in it.

Well I just put slack8.1 on a pentium 75 or is it 100 and it runs fine. And
that's a "old" machine, it does have pci slots though.
Explorer has caused a general protection fault in module kernel32.dll. I'm
sick of Winblows!

You might want more RAM (64M?) if you want X but as far as processor you
are way ahead of the minimum - way ahead...
What I have at home(currently 7.3 and will be 8 in a couple weeks): P/90,
64M RAM, 1M video card (yes X works on that too!) maybe 6G of drive space
and a 2X CD ROM...
