if you are using a dectalk express, the synth keyword is:
dectlk
i may be wrong about that, but i'm pretty certain that decext
is for the dectalk external (the older model from the late 1980s).

Thank you for the assistance. I ran:

cd linux
dosutils\loadlin linux root=/dev/ram speakup_synth=dectlk initrd=images-1.44/root.bin disksize=1.44

And The DECTalk Express on COM1 spoke. I started to go through the installation and got confused with partitioning the HD. I am running Windows 98 SE on my 14.2GB drive C and would like to install debian on my 14.2GB drive D. Do I need a swap partition? how big and would it be a new partition on my Maxtor HD? Yes I am planniing to have Lilo run and ask me to choose between Linux and Windows . Any help would be much appreciated.

I have debian-2.2r2-speakup.iso In my c:\linux directory. Drive C and D are both 14.2 GB and formated with fdisk from Windows 98 SE. I have the following batch file in the root directory of drive C.

cd linux
cd dosutils
loadlin linux root=/dev/hda1 speakup_synth=decext initrd=images-1.44\root.bin disksize=1.44

How come there is no speech? Have I got the right syntax and file structure? I am trying to install Debian and Speakup to my drive D. I used rawwritewin to create a bootup and rescue disk. I used root.bin and rescue.bin from images-1.44\idepci.

In my c:\linux directory I have :debian-2.2r2-speakup.iso" and the following in a batch file in my root directory:

cd linux
dosutils\loadlin linux root=/dev/ram initrd=images-1.44/root.bin disksize=1.44

I can see something running when I power right down and choose "Command prompt only" from the safe menu. However, my July 1995 DECTalk Express on COM1 is silent. Why is the DECTalk Express not speaking?

greetings all. does anyone have a 2.2.17 kernel with speakup built-in to
it. I downloaded and created the three cds of the debian 2.2 release which
is using the kernel 2.2.17. However, the disks on the speakup site are for
2.2.14. this causes all sorts of errors with modules when installting from
my 2.2.17 cds. I also tried installing with linux console=ttyS0 and
figured I could build a kernel with speakup in it later but it appears that
the supplied kernels on the debian cds don't have support for a console on
a serial port.

as you can tell, I am fairly new at all this so any ideas would be
appreciated.
 thanks. brian.
