my best guess is that you forgot to load the oss emulation drivers. i forgot how to do it since it has been
so long since i have needed alsa (crap sound card - just replaced it again)(.
i beleave it is:
modprobe snd-pcm-oss

You shouldn't need to load the oss emulation drivers manually if you have the
right aliases lines in your modules.conf or in debian in your
/etc/modutils/alsa.
