Ok, ok, this is probably going to win the prize for the dumbest email ever to
this list, but I can't figure it out.
I just got my spindle of cds. I pulled up the end that looked to me like it
should have been the top, but that end is attached to the end of the spindle, so
once the lid opens, pulling it up just pulls the spindle out of all hundred cds.
I don't think this is what I want to do.
I have looked and looked at the other end, and honestly I don't see how to open
it.
I really don't care if you all end up thinking i'm the most mechanically inept
(that would be the nice way of putting it1) person on the list, but could
somebody tell me what to look for to open this spindle?
.I also hope that one can count on the discs being a certain way on the
spindle, because from the glimpse I've gotten, there isn't much way to tell the
top side from the bottom side.

Hi again everybody!
Well, maybe the way I opened this is actually right. I pulled up what turned out
to be the bottom, but then if you turn it over, the whole other piece (the round
dep part) slides off and you can then take a cd off and replace it. Seems like
kind of a needless exposure of all the des when you could just expose the top
one, but it does work.

When you open a CD spindle, the cover, the biggest part comes off and leaves
the CDs on the spindle, middle part and sitting on the base the flat part.


It is better to give than to receive. don't believe me, just ask a boxer.

Well, seeing as how CD spindles aren't necessarily put together the
same way...you might have a problem with the top vs.the bottom. Can't
help you there.

However, I *can* help you with how to tell the top of the CD from the
bottom. If your CD doesn't have any tactile lines on the top as most
of mine do not, there is a way. Although, be careful anyway, as I
accidentally pasted a label to the wrong side of a CD once. I felt
stupid!

The data side of a CD has a raised ring around the center, say a half
inch larger than the hole in the middle of the CD. They all seem to
have this ring, too, so if you see a raised ring like this...it's the
bottom. The tops don't have one quite like that. Much easier to show
than to explain, but I think you should understand...

Cygwin and vocal eyes?

Hi,

	I installed cygwin checking the dos box in the install.  It all installed 
and when I go to the remote location with it, I can't track the curser in 
Pine at the remote computer.  Using MsWindows 98 and the dos box.  I open 
the dos window and then load the speech with either dec experess or dectalk 
internal card depending on the computer with no luck.

	Ieas anyone?

I don't know that I can help with all of your mechanical issues, but I do 
have two pointers for you:

1.)	I've found the top unit on most of my spindles was a dummy disk. 
Don't try to record to it, or find some way to satisfy yourself that's a 
real blank CDR.

2.)	You can very easily tell the business side of a CDR. There's a 
circular ridge near the center hole that goes all the way around the hole. 
This ridge is only present on one side of the CDR. Place the ridge side 
down. It's the business side.
