[webwatch] Fw: on-line GPS presentation (fwd)

[Janina Sajka]

I'm forwarding the following because I expect a number of folks on this 
list would be interested in recent GPS developments. I do not know whether 
this particular "chat" service is Windows exclusive, but we can raise a 
rucuss if it is, I'm sure. And, since these folks are developing GPS with 
our tax money, we can also demand equal access to the results, imho.  
Regretably, I'll be otherwise engaged, so perhaps someone else can pick up 
this gauntlet ...

This is almost certainly windows only as it uses the chatterbox software
which is used by audiotips nowadays.  I think it's worth giving him a hard
time about this, but it's not likely to achieve much before ... oh man,
it's on in an hour!

ummmm.  I'd be happy to simulcast this on the reflector and provide the
ability to ask questions from there.  Please write me ASAP if you would
like this.  I don't want to tie up the reflector for an hour if no-one's
interested, but at the same time ... well you know the deal.

New and in need of help.

Hi everyone.  My name is Anna Schneider and I just signed on to this list.  
I'm on the blinux-newbie list too.  I am planning to buy a new computer, 
my first in several years, soon and I want to go Linux but I don't 
actually know much about how to go about this.  What I do know is I hate 
windows and voice output for windows.  I have a lot of questions though, 
some of which may seem very silly, but I don't know where else to ask.  My 
attempts to get help on the other list seem to have petered out and I'm 
not sure why.

I am fairly sure of my specific needs in a system t this point, I just 
don't know of how to go about investigating those needs.  I also need to 
be referred to some basic documentation or a Linux dictionary or something 
because I don't know the terminology.  For example, what is a kernel?

If anyone here has the time and is willing to walk me through this 
process, I would really really appreciate it.  I will probably be starting 
a small business soon too which is one reason why getting this taken care 
of is an imperative.

However, if anyone knows of a alternative to OCR Shop with good quality
scan, and supports my Musteq USB scanner I am listening.

Oooo I have a Mustek scanner which is scsi.  Since it doesn't work with
K1000 in WindBlows, I was about to send it out to the Salvation Army or to
some land fill where all good ole dogey (sp.) scanners go!

So cool if I can perhaps attach it to a Linux box as it's a legal sized
flatbed.

What kind of results have people had with the gocr/jocr stuff, for example,
with socrates?

Windblows available -- from what I can tell, Linux ocr is not there
yet and I understand they definitely don't support twain scanners.

Do TWAIN make scanners?  I thought that TWAIN was an interface.  almost 
every scanner is TWAIN compliant and when installed under Windows uses a 
TWAIN interface but the same scanner will work under GNU/Linux with the 
"Scanner Access Now Easy".  You can see the list of supported scanners on 
the SANE www site.

TWAIN is an interface standard. I don't recall what the acronym is , but
it specifies an interface for three things. Imaging hardware (not just
scanners), software (and drivers) for controlling said hardware, and
programs wishing to call these services. It allows for a program to call
the scanning software directly and then recieve the file back on exit. Or,
it is possible (if the drivers are fully compliant) for the program to
control all scanner functions.

broken Twain and they don't support it as well in some of their series.
Other brainds are even worse.

Okay then be my guest and go out and buy yourself a cheap, off-the-shelf
scanner that nobody has ever heard of.  I can betya! that it is not likely
to operate in Twain mode very well if at all.

I am a beta tester for the K1000 product and we discuss these things with
developers who test various scanners as a part of their job.  They know what
they are talking about.

No thanks, I got a lovely set up here of the Epson 1240 and K1000 6.02 
with Dectalk.  I again will try to bring you round to the discussion that 
started this discussion.  John wrote that TWAIN scanners will not deffinately 
work on the GNU/Linux platform.  The fact that your a beta tester for the 
most exploitative front end for the rtk and fine reader ocr engines has 
nothing to do with it.  It is because of such software that demonstrates 
the need for the time and investment into the GNU/Linux community.

Just a not here.

I have a friend who graduated from school who graduated last year and took a
job with L and H.  He is working with a team that is working on porting
Kurtzweil scanning and reading products to Linux.

So, don't bash them just yet.

I haven't talked to him since he took the job, so I don't know the status of
the project, but perhaps something good will come of it eventually.

Definitely no bashing going on here!  I was just trying to say that Twain
ain't Twain and not the same Twain from scanner to scanner.  We all wish it
were indeed because we could avail ourselves of far more options.  Case in
point, the Mustek Scanner which I paid $400 U.S. for in 1997 was offered as
a substitute from Best Buy because they could not supply the HP 4C I had
ordered.  I later learned that it would not work with K1000 because of
inherent flaws in the Mustek firmware which does not implement Twain as
effectively and which lockedout access to the K1000 software.

I'm not infering that being a beta tester gives me an edge nor position of
authority.  I'm merely relating the facts based upon those whom I happen to
have the opportunity to interact with whose well-founded research an
experiences have thus shared and not arbitrarily.

I will definitely step-up to test the Linux version of K1000 as well.

Just another insentive that I need to get my Linux box setup here ha!  I am
just at this quandry about pulling a bunch of data off of the box.
WindBlows 95 is corrupt and I don't have the patience to modem everything
and I don't know if I can establish a null modem across to this other box.

job with L and H.  He is working with a team that is working on porting
Kurtzweil scanning and reading products to Linux.

So, don't bash them just yet.

I haven't talked to him since he took the job, so I don't know the status of
the project, but perhaps something good will come of it eventually.

Can we use TWAIN compliant scanners under GNU/Linux or not?  It seems that

Hi. Some twain scanners work under Linux the HP 4P, and the 5P come to mind.
There is a OCR software called OCR Shop that has some twain drivers for
these scanners.
Also OCR Shop offers both a X based and a command line based interface.

I've never had any trouble using my twain (technology without an interface
name) compliant scanner with the sane stuff; it's always worked perfectly,
with no problems.

Hi

I'm not sure about the politics of what has happened but I think that L & H 
have gone under or they've just pushed Kurzweil out.  But whatever is the 
case can you really imagine that Stephen would stop selling his front end 
for a thousand dollars to giving it away?  What do you think those who 
have paid for it will say about it?  We saw what happened recently 
when someone was selling K1000 V6 for $25 or however how much it was, 
the current users went crazy.

I was lucky in that my local authority purchased my copy for me.

The K1000 is alive and well.  Kurzweil is now formed as a separate company
and out from underneath L&H.

We are already working on the next Release and Version of K1000 which will
be Version 6.5 available this summer.

There are no plans for this find product to perish.  None at all!

Using TAR

Hi All,

	I downloaded dosemu and got a tar file.  Now remember I don't know a whole 
lot about Linux and so I managed to copy the file to a directory I 
created.  I then went to the directory and tried tar -x filename and heard 
nothing.  Only control-z or was it -c worked to get me back to the prompt. 
So how do I extract the contents of the dosemu file and run the program?  I 
presume I can extract the files in the directory I have created for them 
which I am sitting in.

Tar is an exception to the rule, in that its options don't require the dash. Also, the dosemu files are .tar.gz files, which means they ned to be piped through gunzip before they can be piped through tar. To have tar automatically do this, the basic options you need are zx (z for pipe through gunzip, and x for extract). So, what you want to type is something like:
"tar zx filename".

	I got the rpm to install dosemu wwhich is an earlier version than
the .tar file.  I may try to install the tar archive since I was not all
that impressed with the version from Redhat.  I wonder if anyone else has
a solid dos emulation running.  I have alot of older dos programs I want
to run like DBASE and WordPerfect.

Okay, so I'm very confused.

Does one need a Twain scanner to scan text in Linux or not?

And speaking of scanners, can any who do scan text in Linux recommend a 
certain brand and model to me?  Um, a flatbed is the standard kind of sit 
on your desk scanner right?  I don't think I want to be carrying my 
scanner around with me.  And the size can be pretty standard too.  I was 
thinking 11 by 14 inches or there abouts.  Please recommend off personal 
experience if you can.

And thank you for all your help by the way.  I've been quiet for a few 
days.  Trying to research and gather my thoughts and questions with the 
rest of life going along in the meantime.

Hi, Anna. Ok, well HP has a couple twain scanners in production that work
with OCR Shop.
The HP SCSI 6350 and the HP SCSI 6390.
I use a HP 4P, but that moddle is no longer in production nor is the HP 5P
which I would highly recommend if you could ever find one.
However, according to Vividata's site the HP 6390 is probably a good choice
for twain OCR scanning under Linux. You might want to email there tech
support, and ask them what the recommend. They are the experts, and they may
have a better opinion.
I will tell you what I will do. I will write up a hardware spec sheet of
hardware, prices, and what I recommend. This may help you decide where to
go.
There are places on the Internet such as PC Progress that sell motherboards,
Sound cards, and stuff like that for lower than usual prices, and often you
can build a really awesome Linux computer than less than $1000.00 buy going
that route.
I'll also look into the hardware aspects of trying to hook up a 6390, and
get back to you on that. I haven't tried a 6390 before, and am slightly
unclear myself what i need to get it going.

I did give example of two laptops. The IBM Thinkpad T22 and the Thinkpad 23.
Both go with high recommendation.
However, they cost quite a bit, and unless someone is willing to pay $2500
for one a desktop is cheaper.

It's a site that really is run by IBM, and besides that, they do have
some stuff that you can buy outright at a particular price, as opposed
to dealing with an auction--I have no patience for auctions,
generally. 

Just to give you an idea--and stock changes often--a friend of mine
got a Celeron 700, 64MB RAM, 15" display, CDROM, 20GB hard disk,
Win2K, Ethernet/modem combo card for $899. No, you can't get specific
configurations--you're limited to what's on-hand at the site, but if
you're gonna put Linux on it anyway. ...... 

Just be careful of the I-Series notebooks; many of them have no serial
ports. The A series, T series, and X series though should be safe.

I will stand by my statement that the scanners you find today will claim
twain compliance. Some (such as HP) provide replacement files for the
twain interface. The thing is that this is accomodated in the
specification. It really is quite simple: if they bundle software that is
available elsewhere, they make some use of the twain interface. They may
fully support it. But they still support it.

This is just plain wrong. If you can afford a scanner that is now and not
twain compatible then you have more money then most. Quite simply twain is
a standard interfacing scheme developed for winblows. As such, the only
possible thing I could think of that wouldn't work is a scanner that is
designed for some high end dedicated workstation that costs more then my
annual salary.

  I think twain origenally started out as
  technology whith out a initial name
  I read some thing about it a few years back when I had a scsi scanner on
an old 486 winbox.  Can't remember anything more than that though.

only supports Text Bridge in WindBlows and not K1000.  I have some HP4C and
4P scanners around here which are what we use in WindBlows.  I'm sure over
time that the OCR products will get better in Linux as the developers out
there see there are more blind persons using Linux.

At this time I believe OCR Shop to be the only game in town for blind folks.
The quality is rather good, offers a command line interface, and there is a
growing number of twain drivers for sCSI scanners such as the HP 4P.

Sorry, I haven't been following this thread, but just read the post stating
that "OCR Shop" is the only option for blind people.

In case it hasn't been covered Emacspeak provides a talking interface to
GOCR and I think other scanning engines also.

Slackware 8.0 also has some very good speakup documentation written by SaqibChake, (probably am not spelling his lastname right), who is also on this list. Also, slackware 8.0 is the first distribution that includes speakup by default, which means that it doesn't need to be modified.

You can find the slackware and speakup install docs at:

A few months back I purchased one from 
Pogo Linux

It had very good components, and with the latests version of
Red Hat already installed and ready to go.  Everything
worked right out of the box.  No configuration problems, no
installation troubles.  A few days before they shipped, I
called and wanted to change my order to add another
component.  They not only added it, but shipped without
waiting for my check.

Well, knowing what you want is a big help to us.  Perhaps you could tell

The Linux kernel is the guts of the Linux operating system.  It controls
all input and output and keeps track of system resources.  The Linux kernel
is available as C source code, and it is the Linux kernel that speakup is
included in (or patched into) in order to work.  The kernel is the first
thing to load, and it is for this reason that speakup provides speech from
very early in the boot process.

Well, all of us on here have had to do all this before, so ask away.  Also,
you may want to join us on the speak freely reflector where we can explain
things to you and literally talk you through anything you want help with.

You can get the speak freely for windows program either from
http://www.speakfreely.org or from
ftp://linux-speakup.org/pub/speakup/goodies/ .  In the latter case, you can
get speakfb.zip which is the speak freely package, then you can get
speakfre.exe and replace the old one with that if you want mixing support
(i.e. so you can understand it if 2 people speak at once).  Note though
that some people have had trouble getting this one to work, so if you don't
want to bother, don't worry about it.  If you use JFW, you can get the
scripts from the ftp site in the file speakfreely-jfwscrp.zip.

Once you have it installed and running, have a hunt through the menus.
Fill in at least your name in the appropriate place so we know who you are
when you show up, and then open a connection to lwl.braille.uwo.ca:4074 and
you'll be away.  If you want to see who else is on, visit
http://lwl.braille.uwo.ca/speakup.html and you'll see a list.

information but was not successful in getting to a page that tells me all 
about the api (at least I think it is an api) for speech access to 
x-windows and the command line.  I need to understand this more fully if I 
and our information access committee are to properly plan strategy.

Hello All,

	Here is a copy of our news notes from the national office which I need to 
know does not have any garbage chars in it to distort the reading for text 
readers?  I don't think it does and so thought I would post it since I have 
never really checked it out here.

               NEWS NOTES FROM THE NATIONAL OFFICE.

For the week ending February 1, 2002.

      *  The Battle for Frances Blend begins!

      Can a federal judge sweep away solid educational services
for blind kids and the ability to know ourselves through
association with other blind folks?  There is one trying to do
just that in Los Angeles.  As a part of a more sweeping
integration order, the Los Angeles school system is being forced
to close all special schools for various disability groups except
for deaf folks and kids getting home schooling.  Among these
schools is the Frances Blend school for blind kids and ACB along
with our partners both nationally and in California are not about
to stand for it!  Stay tuned for more news as a solid coalition
of California groups including the California Council of the
Blind are moving quickly to deal with this.

      Nobody endorses segregation in the negative context it has
been traditionally cast. However, a real place for blind kids to
get the braille, mobility, technology, and positive self concept
skills necessary to thrive must be protected and the Frances
Blend school is the next battleground for this.

      *  You send me.  Well, maybe not?  Maybe yes?

      ACB Governmental Affairs Director Melanie Brunson has
completed ACB's response to proposed changes in the "free matter
for the blind" mailing privileges.  Our comments will be joined
by the American Foundation for the Blind and the Blinded Veterans
Association as well.

      The proposed rules if promulgated, would impose seriously
difficult to manage requirements especially on organizations
sending materials by free matter.  Moreover, the proposed rules
do not include equipment to play audio or output braille
materials and do not allow for legally blind folks to send large
print handwritten letters that they compose with a magic marker
or other similar instrument.  ACB will post our comments to our
lists tomorrow.

      In a related story, both Melanie and Penny were off at a
post office last week to try out an accessible stamp vending
machine.  Well, guess what?  It worked!  There is another model
to be tested, but looks like we will all get our licks in!
Smile.

      *  ACB urges better book service for blind of BC.

      ACB Exec Director Charlie Crawford sent a message to the
Premier of British Columbia urging the provincial government to
reverse it's plan to close specialized library services for blind
residents.  The government believes it can save money with no
harm to blind readers of current books produced at government
expense, by allowing the growing number of commercially produced
audio books in public library collections to replace the service.
ACB joins our Canadian brothers and sisters in the struggle to
reverse what is really a cut in service rather than seeing the
commercial audio books as an enhancement to publications not
otherwise available.

      *  DVS Court says, see you in September.

      ACB has learned from our legal team that oral arguments in
the descriptive video case will be heard in September.  We remain
confident that the Court will uphold the Federal Communications
Commission ruling to make video description available beginning
this April.

      *  Gets our vote?  Almost, says Melanie.

      The Federal Elections Commission has rolled out proposed
standards for voting machines which are ambiguous in important
areas for accessibility.  ACB has sent comments on the proposed
standards and will advise as developments occur.

      *  More outreach to folks who are deaf-blind gets attention.

      ACB received a visit from the head of a service center in
Seattle that directly works with consumers who are both deaf and
blind.  We enjoyed the visit and advised her that ACB is
increasing our budget proposals to make our convention more
accessible and to look at a greater partnership between the
classic blindness group and those of us who are deaf and blind.
We encourage interested members and friends to work with our
Sight and Sound Impaired (SASI) committee to help in this effort.

      *  ACB guide to alternative formats nears finnish line!

      Charlie Crawford has finished his review of a truly
comprehensive and thorough document written by our own Jennifer
Sutton to be placed on our web site that provides expert advice
on the whole issue of alternative formats.  The document goes
from the broad perspective of considerations to the narrow
technical details of preparing and distributing information in
alternative formats.  There is still the production stage to
complete, but the substance is done!  Every member of ACB and our
blindness community in general will be proud of this work.

      *  ACB files complaint with Department of Transportation.

      There are stories of discrimination and then there are
stories of discrimination.  ACB has forwarded a complaint on a
transportation system that appears to be begging for a trip to
the woodshed.  Not only are we talking about failure to announce
stops, but apparently calling out stops that were the wrong ones
that left the complainant a distance from their destination.
There's more, but let's allow the civil Rights Office at D.O.T.
to investigate and see just how it all comes out!

      *  ACB and others meet with Federal Aviation Administration.

      Disability advocates brought together by the national
Council on Disability met with the Federal Aviation
Administration in what appears to be the first of a series of
meetings to deal with appropriate observance of the civil rights
of people with disabilities when flying.  Service animals and
proper treatment of wheel chair equipment were on this week's
agenda and the plan seems to be a quarterly meeting to insure the
skies and even airports remain as friendly as they need to be.
ACB appreciates the work of NCD Attorney Kathleen Blank who has
been very responsive to our issues from the first contact we made
with her.

      *  Charlie Crawford joins ACB Radio tech assistance?

      Guess it goes with the territory.  Charlie Crawford worked
with two consumers this week in configuring and running ACB Radio
on their computers.  In addition he did support for the talking
checkbook as well.  Don't worry, he still won't get his top one
hundred shower songs as rendered in original voice on our ACB
Radio Cafe audio stream!

      In a related story to radio and not Charlie's singing, we
have submitted a grant proposal to support a series of radio
drama programs exploring the life experience of leaving college
and home and getting into the world of work and independent
living as a blind young adult.  Our Illinois affiliate will be
helping with advice to the drama company and they will be looking
for a blind actress in the Chicago area.  Know anyone?

      In yet another related story to the arts, we just might have
something very cool at the convention this summer with the help
of our Friends in Art (FIA) affiliate.  Talks still need to
happen and let's see if it goes anywhere.  So keep reading news

Not only did this look good, there was some interesting news in there too.
Maybe not linuxish but I knew people that went to the Blend school back
when I group in the L.A. area.
