When I try that, nothing still changes, and I get the following:
Simple mixer control 'Mic',0
Capabilities: pvolume pvolume-joined pswitch pswitch-joined cswitch cswitch-joined cswitch-exclusive
Capture exclusive group: 0
Playback channels: Mono
Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right
Limits: Playback 0 - 15
Mono: Playback 15 [100%] [on]
Front Left: Capture [off]
Front Right: Capture [off]
Just incase anyone is following this (besides Tyler), I have hit spacebar on the mic entry in alsamixer to turn on capture also.

To: Speakup is a screen review system for Linux.
That utility is from the old OSS sound packages. Better to use arecord,
unless of course you haven't moved up to alsa yet.
And, if you want to stop and start recording, or add tracks, etc., etc.,
look to ecasound.

I'm using kernel 2.4.17. When I got my drivers, 0.90 beta 9 was the latest. Guess I'll have to get the currently newest stuff (sigh).

amixer set capture x%
gave me an error, so I tried :
amixer set Mic capture x%
which worked.
I tried a few values for x above, and got the same thing as before with all of them.

Greg -
In later versions of the alsa drivers I had to set both "Mic
capture" and "Capture" separately. If you set "Capture" without
including the "Mic" with it, you specify an amplitude in percent
form, which you will have to play with to get right.
Mine is:
amixer set Capture 25%
but that will depend on your Master volume setting and goodness
knows what else.

Here's what I get when I try that one:
Simple mixer control 'Mic',0
Capabilities: pvolume pvolume-joined pswitch pswitch-joined cswitch cswitch-joined cswitch-exclusive

Playback channels: Mono
Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right

I typed just what you did, and mine worked, with default
parameters of unsigned 8 bit samples, 8000 samples per second. I
use the arecord command a lot but usually specify different
parameters on the command line. I cannot help you with those
error messages.

Hi all,
I am trying to record a test wave file.
I got alsa setup the way I want thanks to some people who suggested using alsamixer instead of amixer.
I know my microphone works, because I can hear myself in the speakers.
However, when I do "rec test.wav", I don't hear anything upon playing the wav file.
When I do "arecord test.wav" I get the following error.
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:598:(snd_pcm_hw_open) SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL_PVERSION failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
arecord: main:445: audio open error: Inappropriate ioctl for device
Could someone please tell me how to fix this so I could record, or what am I doing wrong here? Thanks.
