trouble installing linux

hi, I have a strange problem, and wondering if anyone here has any ideas. I 
want to play with linux, but would like to try it in a vm under windows, to 
try things out. I have two distros here, arch, and grml. I'm using windows 
xp pro sp3, and vmWare player 3.01.

Arch loads perfectly fine, speakup comes up, but lately, arch is seeming to 
have trouble retrieving packages. Protocol and/or timeout errors are the 
norm here. Even selecting different mirrors doesn't help.
Grml just refuses to speak, but it does seem to load. as far as i know, I'm 
giving the boot loader grml swspeakup as it's options. Maybe i need to try a 
different vm?
btw, this is grml 2009.10.

Well Arthur, while I have not gotten this far with my laptop, some1 suggests I 
try colinux.  Maybe others here will know if that will work better for you

If running from a live cd you don't have a lot of options but if the vm has 
the OS installed installing the vmware tools into the virtual OS can help a 
lot especially the network driver.

The AMD driver in Linux does work but the vmware specific one works a lot 
better.

As I recall, the boot option should be swspeak, not swspeakup.

Also, the vmware network may be down. Try this:
ifconfig eth0 up
dhclient eth0
After a bit it should say something like "bound to 192.168.1.64
renewal in 86400 seconds". Now try using pacman again.

Hello,

I suggest you to try VirtualBox in case you don't solve your problem in VMWare. For me it has set up the network automatically, out of the box after installing on Windows, and all of distros I tried until now download stuff fine.

A note about VirtualBox. I think you still need to use the commandline
as the interface is still pretty inaccessible, or at least it was.

When booting GRML, you'll know if speakup will load because you'll get
a message saying something about typing swspeak again after booting
finished.

	Try an earlier verson of GRML.  I had a similar problem booting 
the sucker on a Dell Lattitude D630 with all Intel hardware.  Older 
versions of GRML would come up speaking, but newer versions wouldn't.  
Whatever they changed in the setup messed something up.  You could 
always go with Debian.  I've never had it stop speaking since first 
installing with Shane's Etch installation CD. Debian came up talking 
from the start and hasn't stopped talking yet.

Yeah, I noticed that with the grml2009.10 cd too, think it's that vesa
boot menu. A few friends have had this problem too. For me, the cd
completely freezes as soon as the menu appears.

One thing which changed in recent versions of GRML which caught me out for a 
little was that the boot loader changed, now you need to press escape before 
typing your boot line.

hi, just to update you all, I got my problem resolved. went back to arch 
linux, changed from using ftp mirrors to http ones and wam. much, much 
better response. Weird, as i always thought ftp was better at this kind of 
thing. oh well. I'm a happy arch user now, and might do a podcast on 
installing into a vm if anyone was interested.

Lots of people have said this ironically enough pressing tab puts you after 
the existing boot parameters so you do the following:
boot the cd wait for it to stop swishing, hit tab.
key in swspeak
then hit enter, grml comes up talking.
Escape probably does stuff also but tab has worked with every copy of grml 
2009.10 i've booted off thum drive or cd.
Usually on thumb drive however I set the swspeak into the boot options when 
I make the thumb drive with grml2usb.
