Hi,
Where's the CVS root for speakfreely? I understand, there's a
"special" version. I'll give it another try.

There is something seriously wrong in that case. There are a lot of hacks
to try which involve rebuilding the source with certain flags set in the
Makefile. For example, -dLINUX_DSP_SMALL_BUFFER and -dNEEDED_LINEAR.
What kind of sound card do you have and are you using Alsa or the stock
drivers? I see that in the latest version of Speak Freely,
-dNEEDED_LINEAR is set by default. This is good for the SB Live from what
others have said, but my old SB AWE64 works better without it. The dead
giveaway is that if you can type "cat busy.au >/dev/audio" and it sounds
like a busy signal, you don't need the option. The file busy.au is in the
directory where you unpacked the source code.

I use either celp or simple compression because my transmitted audio
is broken up whenever I use anything else. Celp is the only mode in
which my audio sounds decent.

Why not GSM, the default mode? GSM sounds 100 times better than simple
compression and compresses down to a level that it works over a 28.8K
dial-up line. Celp is only in the very latest Unix version of Speak
Freely and a beta for Windows. It takes a very fast CPU to compress. GSM
has been supported for a long time, so stick with it.

Just curious, is there a way to list the headers of a CVS tree? Like
what project are currently housed on a given CVS repository?

Given that celp doesn't pass through reflectors, I have considered the
possibility that this wonderful mode may not work in that seting.
This being the case, I'll use "simple" compression when on
reflectors.

Hi Dave. Have you considered the possibility that celp may only work on a
p2p connection? Just a thought.
May you code in the power of the source,
may the kernel, libraries, and utilities be with you,
throughout all distributions until the end of the epoch.

I have it now. Tried building. It built ok, but performs worse than
the speakfreely 7.5 I got from fourmilab.
Igore: Does your reflector pass "celp" audio through? This one
appears not to do. When I use the command "sfmike -celp" on this
reflector, others online hear no audio, yet, it works on the echo
server and when I talk to someone directly (not through any
reflector).

That's strange. Perhaps the module name changed from speak_free to
speak_freely or some variant?

Have you tried speakfree? I know its either one of those but can't
remember which one atm.

Thanks, but, there appears to be no such module. After logging in, I
do:
cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@bumpy.braille.uwo.ca:/usr/src/CVS co
speak_free
and get a "no such module" error. I note the case, as suggested.

The cvsroot is /usr/src/CVS note the case and the module is called speak_free.
