I was trying to get speakup to work with speech-dispatcher using kernel
2.6.36 -- however speechd-up seems not to do anything. I have speech
dispatcher to use the port and start as a centralized service using its
latest version.
Is it possible to get this working?
Thanks.

Hi,
You will most likely need to install speechd-up. The best version I know
of this is for Vinux. It has been modified and a lot of the bugs that
was causing extra speech fixed. I am not sure how you would go about
getting the source if you aren't using Vinux though. If you want I could
get the source, zip it, and send it to you. Unless there's another way?
Thanks

What version of speechd-up are you using? Mine is 0.4-r3.

Hi,
Mine says 0.1 when I do --version but apt-get source downkiaded a
directory labeled 0.4. Either way, it sounds like you have the same or
better.

What is your communication method in speech.conf?

Hi,
Do you mean speechd.conf, config for speech-dispatcher? It is pulse. But
pulse is set to run system wide and there are 2 copies of
speech-dispatcher running in Vinux. One is for Orca and the other is for
the console/Speakup.
Thanks

Did you report the fixes to upstream?

Hi,
Oddly enough the port in the speechd.conf for the speechd-up copy of
speech-dispatcher is commented out. I have included the text from the
file here:
# -----SYSTEM OPTIONS-----
# The Port on which Speech Dispatcher should be available
# to clients.
# Port 6560
# By default, the specified port is opened only for connections
# comming from localhost. If LocalhostAccessOnly is set to 0 it
# disables this access controll. It means that the port will be
# accessible from all computers on the network. If you turn off this
# option, please make sure you set up some system rules on what
# computers are and are not allowed to access the Speech Dispatcher
# port.
I hope this is the right info

He is using a customized speakup for vinux.
Brailcom stopped maintaining speechd-up.
I have a version on github which I have been looking at, but I haven't
had as much time to work on it as I hoped I would. I will take a look in
the next week.

I guess we have to maintain such central repository for it, yes.
