I am running the i386 version of Ubuntu Edgy on my new AMD64 system, as
I am using the hard drive from my old dead 32-bit system. For some
strange reason, speechd-up seems to die at random for no apparent
reason. This seemed to happen on my 32-bit system as well, but it
happened much less frequently. It used to happen about once a day, but
it now can happen anywhere from 2 to 3 seconds to 2 or more hours after
starting it. There seems to be no pattern at all to this occurrence,
but sometimes speechd-up itself dies and sometimes it seems to crash
speech-dispatcher so that restarting speech-dispatcher is the only thing
that fixes it. I should also note here that although I am experiencing
this problem while running a 32-bit version of the OS, I have been told
that the same problem occurs when running a 64-bit Gentoo.
Has anyone found a workaround for this problem or is there a newer
version of speechd-up that fixes it?
Thanks for any help,
Lorenzo

Hi Lorenzo,
could you please try the latest CVS version and let me know? There has
been a bugfix which should help. I'm sorry we didn't release the version
yet. I have a lot of work right now.

I got the latest CVS speechd-up as suggested, but I am having nearly the
same problem. The death of speechd-up occurs slightly less frequently,
but it still only runs for a few minutes at a time. Most of the time I
can just run sudo speechdup to restart it, but sometimes I have to
restart speech-dispatcher before I can run speechd-up again. I have to
restart speech-dispatcher about every 3rd or 4th time speechd-up dies..
I have been told that the latest speech-dispatcher fixes some kind of
crash problem. Is it possible that speech-dispatcher 0.6.1 could be
crashing speechd-up even though it doesn't crash Orca's
speech-dispatcher gnome-speech driver?
Thanks,
Lorenzo

That's bad.

No, Speech Dispatcher cannot be crashing speechd-up. If Speech
Dispatcher crashes, the connection dies and SpeechD-Up complains
in the logfile /var/log/speechd-up.log and quits.
Could you please send me the logfile and preferably also a backtrace
of SpeechD-Up crash? You need to run it in gdb with the -s option given
to speechd-up and you need to do
thread apply all bt
Please let me know if you need more instructions.
Thank you,
Hynek Hanke
