Hi all. Last I knew there were still a few Hams hanging around, but not sure as of right now. Does anyone know if one is required to live in the state in which they take their license exam? If
so, is the resulting call sign issued by the visiting state or one's 'home state'? Based on the information I currently have one does not have to reside in the state where they take a
Technition-class license test for example? Thanks!

Hi Igor,
No, you can take a ham radio test anywhere in the U.S. you like. Your
call will be issued based on your mailing address. You, for instance,
would get a 1 call since you're in MA (something like KB1XYZ, though
not that one, since the 2X3 calls with X suffixes are reserved for
experimental use and not the Amateur service.)
You've got until June 30th to use the current tech question pool. It
changes up a bit on July 1.

I am a HAM, N0YJV.
You can use your call sign from where ever it came from, and it doesn't
matter if the number in the sign matches your residence.

I should add that of course we have to get our license renewed every ten
years, so then I think you will need to get it re-assigned to the area in
which you live.
But if I had gotten my license renewed last year, and moved to another part
of the country, I could use my number with the 0 in another area for the
next 9 years.

Actually, it is, with the following in mind:
1) Your callsign is issued based on the state in which it was
originally issued. That is, if you pass a license exam and when you
get your normally issued call, it will be issued based on your state
of residence. If, after that, you decide to apply for a vanity call
(at an extra fee), you can get one with any call district designator,
with the only limitation being that it has to be a call available to
your license class.
2) If, after you receive your license, you move to another call area,
you may keep your original callsign. I, for instance, got my call
issued initally in Texas, which is in the fifth call area. I now live
in Pennsylvania, which is in the 3rd call area. I was not required to
get a new call due to my move.
4) You may use your call in any part of the country, portable or
mobile. yes, there is a regulatory diifference between portable and
mobile.

Not so. You may renew your license at every 10-year interval and keep
your original callsign, regardless of your current residence. Please
understand this distinction: your callsign is issued originally by
your state of residence when it is obtained; once obtained, you may
keep it and renew it until you die.
If you do decide to change your callsign based on your new state, you
would then receive a call sequentially, as though you just got a new
license. For instance, if I were to get a 3 call, and since I have an
Extra class license, I would get (I think) AB3-something. On the
other hand, you may request a vanity call as I mentioned before, at
an additional cost.

Then you can at least answer the original question.
Which you did not originally do.
It wasn't until Buddy gave a more detailed answer that you knew what was
asked in the original post.

I expect the material won't change much, so if you learn the
concepts, you're likely in good shape...but the questions themselves
change.
Washington state is in the 7th call area. I think that they're
finishing up the KD7 series right now.

You're supposed to change your address, and this would be done if you
renew, but they fcc years ago quit requiring one to change their call. I
live in seven land, but still keep my original 0 cal.
