Is anyone besides me bothered by the huge number of off-topic posts to this
list?
I guess I've gone OT a few times myself. But I think it was different when
*most* of the posts were about speakup and maybe somebody would ask about a
character-based program for whatever. It seems that the vast majority of
posts to this list are now about ubuntu and/or orca.
I know there is a list for orca developers. Maybe there should be one for
ubuntu & orca users. And there is a list for blind linux users.

What off topic posts are you talking about? I don't recall having seen
any off topic posts recently.
As for the ubuntu/orca/newby questions posts, this still deals with
gnu/linux. As far as I know, Kirk's policy has always been that
anything gnu/linux related goes. Unless Kirk has changed this
recently, all the recent ubuntu/orca/newby posts would seem to be
along those lines. Now, if Kirk has changed this recently, then you'd
be right that this is OT. My apologies to Kirk of course if anything
I've said here is out of line.

Greg, I quite clearly explained what I was talking about. If you want to
tell me I'm mistaken as to what is considered OT for this list, that would
be fine. I think it's reasonable for someone who subscribes to a list named
"speakup" to assume it's about speakup and NOT about orca. But whether the
orca posts are technically off-topic is not the point.
Maybe you disagree with me but there is no reason to be rude.

I'm sorry. I just reread your earlier message, and noticed the
references to ubuntu/orca, which I guess my ears/brain must have
skipped over the first time around. It wasn't my intent to be rude,
and if one had assumed that I've read the entire message, one would
conclude from my reply that I was being rude. So, please accept my
apologies.

Well, comparing this list to some other lists I run the topics here
are just about as close as one could get to staying on topic.
I really don't want any list Nazis going on here. As far as I am
concerned if it is about speakup/gnu/linux/synthetic speech or
applications relating to those topics it is on topic. What is not on
topic is maybe brailletty subjects or race cars, lotteries are pretty
suspect also unless I'm the winner. I'm not crazy about Chihuahuas or
Taco Bell for that matter so they're probably off topic also.

I don't think the intention was to appear rude. We're all friends here.

Geez, "list nazi"? All I did was offer an opinion that the list is getting
to be more about orca than about speakup. Holy cow, not as if I'm setting up
gas chambers.
Alright. I withdraw my objection.

We're Linux people, and we have powerful tools at our disposal...
A well-crafted procmail rule or two can do wonders.
Most of the Orca/Ubuntu/distro-of-the-day messages have a
relevant subject line.
Take care,

Well, I meant that comment to apply to myself not you. After
rereading it I see where you would consider that I was referring to you
which I was not. I apologize for not being more clear on that point.
I meant to say that I do not want to be a list Nazi about what issues
should or should not be discussed within the realms of what I outlined
in the other post that is. So *no* dialogues on irritating yappy
little dogs that represent non-food organizations pretending to be
Mexican cuisine.

This is true, and, procmail isn't the only option in that
department. Maildrop/mailfilter is another tool that does the same
thing, and there are probably other such programs that I don't know
about.

Right, well, the clutter (if you can even call it that) isn't really my main
problem with the OT posts. My main problem is that I think this list has
become the de-facto list for blind linux user questions and it has all but
killed off the blinux list. That's a shame because:
1. That list is a lot more publicized
2. It actually is for general linux questions for the blind
If you google "blind linux user" the first couple of links are for the
blinux list. I don't know how far you have to go down before you find a link
to this list but it's more than a handful. I'm afraid that blind linux users
are going to find the blinux list and conclude that there isn't much of an
active blind linux user community. And even if they find this list, they
would conclude that it's about speakup. Not about orca or emacspeak.
I don't know how many people on this list are also on the blinux list. Not
too many I think. But every once in a while you get someone asking how to
get started with linux. I've steered some people here saying speakup is
probably the best way to get started.
I don't know... I just think that if this list is going to be about linux
for the blind, it should say so. Neatness counts. And the problem isn't
*really* with my .procmailrc.

The fact that the FAQ and web page haven't been updated in years may lead
one to the same conclusion. For example, the question about installing
Linux eyes-free only barely mentions Speakup, and fails to mention the
Speakup modified Redhat, or that Slackware has included Speakup since
version 8.0 which was released in 2001.
