I've found unstable fails over here when doing an upgrade. ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 9+ messages in thread
* external synthrecommendation? debian kernel upgrade Jude DaShiell @ ` John Heim ` Kirk Reiser ` (2 more replies) 0 siblings, 3 replies; 9+ messages in thread From: John Heim @ UTC (permalink / raw) To: Speakup is a screen review system for Linux. I bought an external doubletalk a year ago in April. So it's only a year and a half old and it appears to hav died. I first started having trouble with it when it was still less than a year old. I kind of wish I had sent it back when it first started acting up. I have 2 questions: 1. Is my experience with the doubletalk LT typical? How long do they usually last? For $350, I'd expect to get more than a year and a half out of it. 2. Any recommendations for an external synth? Obviously, I want to spend as little as possible but I'll spend whatever I have to to get a good synth. PS: The symptoms are as follows: I turn the doubletalk on, it says "doubletalk ready". But it does not speak when used with a machine running speakup. I have a tripletalk external synth at workso I know speakup is working. When I initialize the doubletalk, I often get kernel error messages. But I don't think that's particularly meaningful. Probably the ltlk driver just doesn't know how to handle it whenit detects a synth but the synth doesn't respond properly. ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 9+ messages in thread

I would recommend just getting your DoubleTalk LT repaired and upgraded rather than buying a new synth. You could send it back to RC Systems or send it here to I.A.M. in London. Their number is (519) 679-4828 if you want to phone them to find out about cost and time etc. If you called Randy and explain to him it was fucked before the one year was up he might even repair it for nothing. He did. After asking me to run some tests, Randy said i could send it back. I just got it back yesterday and it's working again. Greg Nowak pegged the problem too -- bad serial cable. I kind of suspected that too but the one thing that made me doubt it was that I couldn't get it to work by jiggling the cable. I think the pins inside the molded end were bad and that may be why jiggling it didn't help. . ^ permalink raw reply [flat|nested] 9+ messages in thread

Glad to hear you got it straightened out satisfactorally. Randy is usually pretty decent about repairs and the like. The volume control is a little scratchy, but if I leave it alone and use the speakup volume commands, it is never noticed. It doesn't happen often, but I've had to go through 2-3 cables in the ten years that I've owned my bns, so a bad cable isn't unheard of. It was working great until I came into work one morning and it was dead. It says "Accent ready" like normal when you turn it on but nothing else. I tried disconnecting and reconnecting the internal battery, altering or switching cables with no results. I haven't done anything with it for some time now but I may give one of the phone numbers Kirk hs given out recently and way back when I brought up my problem before. External synths are worth every bit of their weight in gold as far as I'm concerned.
