Best version.

[Léonie Watson]

All,

    Is there any particular version of Speakup that runs better than
another, on a Debian (testing) distro, with a Dectalk Express synth?

    I'd guess that the latest version is probably the best, but thought I'd
check.

CVS version, hands down.

Having said this, though, I hasten to add that by its very nature CVS
might be broken at any given time because of newly checked in code, etc.
I consider the CVS Speakup head and shoulders above 1.5, though, and
have moved it onto all of my machines save the one where I have had
trouble getting a more recent kernel to compile.

Hi.  The CVS version has a lot of good features, but the cursor tracking
has made several programs difficult to use.  Aptitude, alsamixer, and
mutt are 3 of them.  I wish there was a way to disable cursor tracking
in speakup CVS.  I still keep kernels with speakup 1.5 because of this.

I can't say anything regarding aptitude or alsamixer as I rarely use
them, but what kind of problems are you having with mutt? I have tweaked
mut quite a bit over time, but even without my .mutrc it isn't too hard
to work.

Yeah, I'm wondering what problems you're having with mutt and cvs
speakup, as well. I practically live in mutt. Seems my technologies are:

mutt
lynx
the telephone

in that order.

Hi.  I read messages within the pager.  If I want to leave mail in my
in box I usually press the down arrow to read the next message.  With
speakup 1.5, I would hear the next message.  With speakup CVS, I just
get the status line spoken.

I hadn't noticed that before. i have always just used j/k to move to the
next/previous message and they seem to work correctly. I can see what
you mean about turning off the cursor tracking, but I would much prefer
to have this problem than hearing everything twice in lists.

It has to be a muttrc setting, then, because exactly the strategy you
describe works for me just fine and I'm running CVS Speakup.

As for mutt, I usually just read the messages line by line anyway
because I usually try to skip headers and previously quoted material.

For full screen curses type programs like alsamixer, cfdisk and the
dialog utilities used by slackware configurations and the like, cursor
tracking doesn't work at all with CVS speakup.  For that reason alone,
we really need the ability to turn off cursor tracking for those
situations.  Otherwise, the cursor currently tracks beautifully in
full editors like emacs.  It even tracks good when scrolling text to
the next screen page.

wouldn't be a bad idea for me to take the novice role! Hence my plunge in

Hi.  Yes, please send it to me.  I've gotten used to hearing the message
read with up and down arrows.  With speakup CVS, I'm always having to
remember to press plus after changing to another message.  Thomas's
solution works, but it's hard to unlearn a 2 year habbit.

    I've been meaning to shift over to Linux for some while now, so its
given me a good opportunity.

    You're right, Linux is likely to be severely in the minority at
Techshare, but definitely the more of us there are the better. I suspect the
