Could you send me the step by step instructions on how to create a Speakup adapted Mandrake 8.1? 
As well I would need the site addresses so I can download the components.

Hi, there isn't much to tell at this point. Have an installed Mandrake 8.1 system, download the source from kernel.org, and build  from source.
Since there is so much interest lately in Mandrake I'll try, the word is try, and make a speakup distribution which everyone can install.
I've never done it before so it is going to be a challenge.

One thing I would love to know: why is there much interest in Mandrake? I
just don't get it. Why bother with a gui if you can't access it? And in
reading it seems that is the big selling point of the distro: it is
optimized for the gui.

it's other main selling point: it has a hardware detection routine that 
basically works.

Hmm, perhaps I have had a sheltered computing life. I have only had a few
things ever not detect just fine with installation. And as for detecting
hardware after, I always disable it. Then again I don't add and remove
cards on any regular basis.

The only thing I have heard, is that Mandrake has improved performance 
over Redhat.

Actually it has all the console tools you could want.
The gui is only a default if you take the default install, 
My wife and son also use the same computer and they are
sighted and like the KDE gui.
It boots into console and they can run startx to get to what
they want.
I've ran with emacspeak for some time now, but want to try
speakup because it gives me access to not only the startup
messages, but also better access to my prefered email and
browser, pine and lynx.

hello List:

Is there plans to have Speakup to be imported to the latest version of 
Mandrake?
I haven't got a Linux system up yet. As soon as I get one of my friends old 
PC's, I'll be making the transition.  By the time it takes for me to get a 
good handle on Linux from an operators point of view, Gnopernicus should be 
close to being publicly launched.
I'm hoping that Speakup and Gnopernicus will be able to work hand and hand.
Speakup could be used for the partition creation, formatting, installation 
and configuration, while Gnopernicus would be used for GUI accessibility.

It is intrresting that you ask. I've just downloaded ttthe 8.1 disks, and
was planning to try my hand at building a full distribution with Speakup in
Mandrake 8.1.

Hello.  As always, feel free to correct me if I missed something.  I looked 
seriously at Mandrake to determine how difficult it would be to add 
Speakup.  I will admit that I really am new at kernel compiling but I have 
got some kernels to compile before.  Anyway, maybe the source is available 
out there somewhere but I could not find it.  I thought I found it but it 
did not look useable for my purposes.  Likewise with SUSE.  If there is a 
way and someone can outline the necessary files to get and steps involved, 
I would attempt to get Speakup working with other distros.
