I have confirmed that on slackware 11, patching the 2.6.21.5 
kernel from kernel.org with speakup from cvs using checkout 
script succeeds in all patches, kernel and modules build cleanly.

    Thanks, I already went and did it with 2.6.20.  I know that's not 
exactly the most recent, but it's one I can know for certain will patch 
cleanly on account of having done it before.

Looking at Slackware-current, which is to become Slackware 12.0, it will 
include 2.6.21.5 with the usual speakup.s kernel.  The major differences 
are that they are finally dropping 2.4 kernels, and also dropping support 
for boot floppies simply because Pat couldn't get a 2.6 kernel to fit on a 
floppy disk.

Does anyone know what they're doing about zipslack, since umsdos isn't
supported in 2.6.x? Are they dropping that too? I haven't used
zipslack/zipspeak for a very, very long time, but I was just
wondering. From a sentimental point of view, it would be sad to see
zipslack dropped, that's what I started out with.

Zipslack is very cool. I used to always have a DOS partition
as a rescue partition that could boot DOS or zipslack from 
the lilo menu. The umsdos idea was brilliant.

    Doug, when I tried to apply Speakup patches to the kernel 2.6.17 I downloaded from Slackware, I got a couple of messages about hunk rejections.  They occured in keyboard.c and vt.c.  I was wondering if these were well-understood problems with the patch, or are just a sign that I do indeed need to use 2.6.21.5 or something like that without relying on a Slackware package?

I suggest trying 2.21.5 from kernel.org, see if that patches cleanly.

You really ought to just get the latest 2.6.21.x  kernel and build it from 
scratch that way.  It may take some tweeking but you'll thank yourself in 
the end.  Good experience.
If you plan on updating your kernel frequently, get the linux-2.6.21.tar.bz2 
file along with the latest patch for that kernel, like linux-2.6.21.5.patch 
and apply it.  Then, when a new patchlevel comes out, get that new patch, 
linux-2.6.21.6.patch, unapply the patchlevel 5 patch and apply 6.

This is to be expected, current speakup cvs will not patch into
anything lower then 2.6.20 I believe. You need to either checkout cvs
from an earlier date, or just go for 2.6.21.5.
