Hi all,

Couple questions.
First, I have a friend who is interested in installing linux. She has an old telesensory reading edge machine that she thinks will act as an external dectalk synth, but isn't sure. anyone know if this is true or not?

Second, anyone know where I can get information on how to get my internal dectalk working with speakup? The list of synths says it will work as a module, but how?
Thanks.
Christy

Hi, it should the version of dectalk software used in that device was
dectalk 3.0 not 2.0 as was the external dectalk but if memory serves me
right they should be compatible.

Yes, the Reading Edge certainly has a DEC-Talk synthesizer built into it. However, the version was sort of an "odd-
duck", and the 25-pin female port on the rear of the machine actually has 2 9-pin connectors. So, one must have a
copy of the manual to get the specs for the cable.

Well, she already has some kind of cable, because she connects her reading
edge machine to the computer all the time to save the files that she scans,
her windows machine that is. I'm assuming she'd just use the same cable.

The answer to the first question is very probably yes. I say very
probably since the last kurzweil I had access to was a KPR3. That machine
had an input serial port. It was 25 pins, and hooking a computer cable to
it then sending screen output out the cable caused the KPR3 to talk.
Interestingly, the second serial port on the KPR3 was output and because
Ray Kurzweil thought enough to put that into the machine's design we were
able to use it to save my employer about $100,000.00. A contractor had a
tape with lots of documents on it our agency wanted and the contractor
said they could provide it for $100,000.00. My employer had gotten me a
kurzweil so I could read some of the hard copy documents in circulation.
I had the idea to write a kermit script that could talk to the kurzweil's
output port and collect documents scanned onto it on computer disk. That
script when my employer was able to show the contractor that it worked
motivated the contractor to hand over the tape at a price of $0.00.
