Hi List Members:
I'd like to get an idea of what Linux users prefer for a sound card.
Are people primarily using SB Live cards on Pentium-based boxes or are
there other cool alternatives that should be considered in Linux? I'm
running a Dell server with no onboard sound under Debian.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi:
I love the SB Live!. It has very good support and it sounds reasonably
good. The price is also very atractive! However, if you are looking
for something newer/better, you can try the SB Audigy. I think that is
how you spell it... Those are the only two real soundcards that I have
experience with in Linux. Note that many other soundcards are
supported, including some professional multi-track soundcards.
You can take a look at www.alsa.org to see more about Linux and audio.

Can you resend that url, please? It sent me to the ALS foundation
which was interesting, but ... <smile>
Thanks.

running modconf will show you all the soundcards that you can load if you have
the official debian speakup kernel. WHat kind of sound card do you want to
have? If you use alsa, what works and what doesn't work or is not yet tested
yet but may work is pretty well documented at alsa-project.org

Hi Sean:
Thanks for the links and the alsa-project site is fascinating, even a
little overwhelming at first. I've got lots to learn.
I plan to use a sound card for recording both voice and music, sound
editing, and as my synthesizer, at least for now. I'll be using
brltty for a serial braille display so am not necessarily as concerned
as others might be about when speech kicks in, but I do want some
speech. I could easily go out and buy an SB Live, but decided to ask
around a bit and see if something new and intriguing might be available.
My Sound Blaster card used under Windows is pretty old, but I must say,
it's midi is pathetic and the sound can be a bit hissy and sibilant!
Even improving that would be nice, especially for things I wish to
broadcast and/or edit.

The SB Live cards that I have used, have always worked without any special
configuration.

Yes,
There is also a tool that is part of both fedora and redhat that will
help you configure and / or determine the hardware on your computer.
This is called kudzu. I strongly recommend reading the documentation on
kudzu before you try to use it though. This is done by typing man kudzu
at the command prompt.
