I thought I'd mess around with connecting my laptop up to a cell phone
to enable it onto the internet from time to time. I know, the
connections are slow and all that but thought it a neet way to drag
the internet on the road with me. The question here is, How do I go
about making Linux recognize my phone? I have an LG VX4500 model with
a USB cable with their mobile office kit; now that kit is obviously
rigged for windows but understand connectivity to linux is quite
possible and I recall Gene Collins doing this with his phone.

So I'm wondering if and what modules I might need tohook up the phone
probably to a USB connection. Also, my machine doesn't have USB ports
but I am looking for a PCMCIA USB adaptor I could hopefully use.

This is a very rough guess, but maybe you want to look at enabling the
usb modem option in the kernel.

Treat the phone like a Haze compatible modem.

To: Richard Villa, Speakup is a screen review system for Linux.

One thing you might consider is an unlimited cellular internet access
account, from T-Mobile, or one of the other companies (I mention T-Mobile,
because I sell that service, and know that the card they use for the GPRS
connection, works in Linux).

76K, $29 plus tax per month (from T-Mobile, anyway; Sprint, AT&T, etc., do
similar things, although they limit your hours, and cost more).

They use the Sieara Wireless Aircard (PCMCIA) for access, and there is a
Linux PCMCIA data file that works for it.

If you are interested in investigating this route, contact me at:

(I don't usually see personal mail at this address)
