Hi guys.
I've finally got a distro of linux!.
I've got zipspeak which is a slightly modified version of slackware 7.1.
My question is, 1 can I install it with out using loadlin and 2, can I install it via a network and if so, where can I find the network.dsk file that setup refers to??
Thanks for all your help so far guys. Shaun

well, I've fond the network.dsk file so that iliminates one of my queries..
if anyone else wants it, you can get it from "here"
ftp://ftp.slackware.com/.1/slackware/slackware-7.1/rootdsks/
try that and see how you go.
I had to take it by force cause it kept saying something about me being user 800 of 5000 or some message like that ah well I've got it. but still need answers to my 2 other wueations please?
Thanks Shaun..

You seem like your going to become a power user pretty quick like. I
would recommend that you skip the zipslack. I think you are looking to do
more then it was built to handle. I do not think that zipslack is able to
be installed on the network. zipslack is a distro that runs on the umsdos
file system which lives on top of a fat partision. I say just use
slackware. Hopefully 7.2 will be out in a bit. That will surely be
nice. I hope they are going to move to using the 2.4 kernel tree. Or
hopefully 2.2.19 is better then 2.2.18. man 2.2.18 sucks!

well. thanks for your vbotye of confidence frank. I do hope to become a
power user but it'll take a bit of time for that.
I first want to see if I can run it and learn all I can about it.
so for now, I feel that zipslack is a good way to start.
at least when I get the full distro, I'll know what I'm doing hehehe..

You can currently do a talking network install of Redhat 7.
Bill has done some great work in getting the install working with Redhat,
and once the install is finished, you have a talking linux box.
I have done at least 6 network installs with Bill's install disk, and must
say that it works quite well. The only problems that I have had with the
talking installs from Bill, are problems that I created myself.
In short, I recommend giving it a try, especially if you want to have a
network install, and a talking kernel once the install is finish. The bonus
is, you boot into the install.
Good luck, hope this helps!

but so far, it seemed stable enough to me.

Hi Steve
There were some scheduling problems with 2.2.18. It's just kind of
slow. It gets stuck doing some stuff for some reason. Redrawing the
screen is quite a bit slower. Fortunately from what I can tell with out
having done some major testing it looks like 2.4.2 is much better about
this then any of the kernels since 2.2.16. Just my observations. Yes I
did notice that slackware hasn't moved the development trees to 2.4
yet. I sure hope they do.

If Slackware's past behavior is any indication, I suspect that you
won't see kernel 2.4 until 7.3 or 8.0 (depending on how they decide to
number their next revision or two). They seem to be somewhat, shall we
say, conservative in their adoption of the next major kernel
release. I think, though couldn't swear, that Slackware was the
second-to-last to adopt the 2.2 kernel. Debian was the only distro
that I canthink of that took longer...although I think that this was
for different reasons. When Slackware 4.0 came out, I believe
2.2-enabled distros had been out for quite some time, and it took
until the next revision after that for Slack to migrate to
glibc2.1. So they're rather conservative like that, but on the other
hand, far as I can tell, it's a nice, solid distro, and I must say I
like it quite a lot. (I started with Slack--now run Debian, although I
don't really have any problem with Slack.)
