Helo Kenny, I'm not entirely sure where I'm going to get it yet how I have an idea so when I know more I'll let you know.
The only lib that I haven't got installed is libXm.so.1. where the hell can I find that. I have libXm.so.3 installed with SuSE but this doesn't seem to work. wouldn't the version 3 of this lib work? would it not have the features of version 1? I've set up a simlink to that lib and called it libXm.so.1 but I'm not sure how to get the rpm to find it.

Hi.
I have no idea. I would suggest checking archives of libs from years
ago. The problem with VIAvoice was it's dependency on old and out dated
libs. Any docs I've found from people who got it working used some
tricks to install the out dated libs.

Hi,
I have Viavoice outload now working with speakup. I used the old rpms ro
install viavoice, modified the script runcmdlinespeak, and used the
generic module of speech-dispatcher to get speechd_up to use it.
I had to install glibc-2.3.1 and one or two other older libs to get it
working.
I also had another viavoice copy which cut off words and is not stable in
general.
I moved the compiled version of glibc-2.3.1 onto different machines with
success. I have tested under Fedora 2 and 3 and Debian.

How does the responsiveness of viavoice compare to flite? I no the
pronunciation is much better. If you would be willing I'd like to see some kind
of howto on getting viavoice to work with speakup, where to get it, modifying
speach-dispatcher etc. At least where to go for speech dispatcher documentation
on modifications to that program.

I might consider messing around trying to get older versions of glibc working with SuSE but will this solve the problem of it requiring libXm.so.1? lesstif might have this so I might be as well downloading an older version of this and its dependancies.
In your opinion is it worth all that work? is it very responsive?
Thanks

Mine did not seem to require that particullar lib.
If you want, we can organize that you download a tar.bz2 file or two from
here and try it quickly.
In that case, it is not so mutch work.
It is very responcive on a 1.7 ghz box and still quite ok on a 1.4 ghz,
but a bit slower with the key echo.
That is what i am typing on now.
