I use the following script to compile flite and this will give me the
16 bit voice.  Actually, I thought there was some talk of making it
the default but I could be thinking of speech dispatcher.  Any way,
here is my script for what it's worth.

#!/bin/sh
# Configure flite to create shared objects also.
./configure --enable-shared --with-vox=cmu_us_kal16
- ----- End script -----
Note the kal16 option.
