Hello, listers!
I do not have a monitor attached to my computer, it just so happened. As a
result, every time I attempt to configure X, the procedure fails. How am I
to tell X to ignore the monitor?
Best regards,
Victor

I don't think you can, as I remember it, X requires a whole bunch of
different monitor settings such as sync rate and all of that crap. If it's
possible, I'd be interested to find out. Of course, I've always understood
it that you could set up linux without setting up x, but if it's necessary
for the system, I can understand that too.

Also note with the RH installers if your wanting to use the kick start
file it creates to reinstall the system at a later date you may not be
able to if you have no mouse or monitor.
I tried it and when it didn't detect the mouse or monitor it bombed on me
and had to shut down.

See, that's really bad. Windows is happy if it found a display driver, and
even if it did not, it assumes the lowest possible settings, which are
simulated by the operating system.
Best,
Vic

Hi, I am afraid you won't be able to do this. X-windows requires specific
settings from your vidio card and from the monitor. The designers assumed
that you would be using a monitor with your computer, and thus x requires a
monitor and mouse or it will fail.
At least this has been my experience. I've successfully setup x, but in each
case if the monitor wasn't present x didn't load.

I wonder if there is some emulator that would full X into thinking that
three is a physical monitor, a kind of virtual monitor?

Thomas -

What if you lie to X? Must the monitor be turned on to use X, or merely
connected? What if you get the video card parameters right but just
provide any old arbitrary data for the monitor and then never turn it
on? Would that work?
