In the original post I was fishing for some possibility of using the
underlying os more directly then doing a linux dual boot approach. It's my
understanding that the os is in the unix/linux family, the "bst" term comes
to mind as a unix/linux workalike as the mac os being used. If it is so
related, can pine and lynx etc. be compiled and used instead of doing a
dual boot linux thing? Further, what speech approach might be possible? I
ask again about doing dosemu in either case, will dos talk to the mac
hardware?

You can run pine, lynx, sirc and a whole host of other apps and utilities.
apple downloads is full of them. You can telnet into osx with ssh and it's
got a ready made set of shells right out of the box. You can use the
terminal application on the mac its self but the interface with VoiceOver
needs some work. I don't know that you can boot directly into the command
line though.

There are those who have tried to get emacspeak working under mac os. I suppose
anyth9ing that compiles could work if there is a port for the mac.

booting or logging into the command line can be done in one of two ways:
1. start up in single user mode by holding down command (the apple
key) and 's' as soon as you hear the startup chime
2. enable the "other (users)" option in the login window (i think by
enabling the root account in NetInfo Manager - it's in one of the menu
items), and log in as ">console"
and yes, you can use the likes of lynx and others. There's a ports
system for OS X called DarwinPorts (http://darwinports.opendarwin.org)
with over 2500 different ports, all listed on their website. so if
you want you can play around with nmap or irssi or whatever you want.
the more popular alternative to DarwinPorts is Fink
(http://fink.sf.net), based on apt from Debian. Fink's more popular
because it has twice the number of ports and comes with a fancy,
simple binary installer that needed no knowledge of how to use the
terminal or CVS. DarwinPorts 1.0 though now has a binary installer so
really, pick and choose the one you want based on your needs - some
people install neither, some install portage for OS X which is still a
little too new (http://www.metadistribution.org/macos/), some install
just one, and some install everything.

Thanks for the info. The below implies that speech is still there when
doing a telnet into the os, is this correct? If not, are there any speech
options, including a possible speakup variation, for working in the os with
a shell?

At this link someone provided is another mentioning use of unix/linux
related applications. Does anyone know anything about this? On another
web page I read how to make a multiple boot system with linux and the mac
os on the same drive. How well would dosemu work in this setup with the
need to talk to mac hardware?

the Mac OS/Linux thing is only on the ppc platform/hardware. you can
use mol or have a dualboot machine, one with OS X and another with
gentoo or yellow dog linux or some other ppc linux distro.
no idea how it might work though. if pearpc didn't crawl at a snail's
pace, i'd try to see if voiceover worked.

I have OS 9, OS X, 1 Linux distro, and room for 3 more on my powerMac.
This machine is mainly for me to help test accessibility in Linux, as
well as OS X. I have also got a demo copy of OutSpoken that I play with
occasionally on OS 9.
Pearpc doesn't yet have sound support as far as I know, and yes it is
quite slow.
