Just to update the list:

I examined the script that was looking for the docbook package
and noted where it ought to be found, and put it there. It
worked. Sorry I panicked and asked for help before my brain
kicked in!

I got the Festival speech package going yesterday and now it
looks like Gnome 2.0.6 is well on the way to being installed too.
With all this work, I probably will not like working in a GUI
after all!

Chuck

Hey Chuck,

When you get this all going, can you let us know what steps you ended
up going through to get it all done? I'm referring to Festival +
gnome + gnopernicus, etc.

I wonder how festival sounds; can that be used with emacspeak?

I second Steve here. I was going to wait for someone to release slackware packages of all this stuff.

However, If chuck can share what he did step by step, I might forego that wait if I have time on my hands.

Ahh, config/makes aren't generally all that bad. Yes, large apps are
probably smoother when done in a distro package due to the many
support files that come along. But still, if the make has a good
uninstall target, it wouldn't be all that hard to upgrade from source
tarballs either. It's the tricky ones with complex tweek procedures
that can make this process harry.

Hi Steve,

Yes, I have been asked to write a Slackware oriented contribution
to a "howto" written by someone on the gnome accessibility list.
I now have all the pieces in place but as yet I get no speech
with Gnome -- the jury is still out.

Festival is supposed to work with emacspeak, but I am not an
emacs user so have not tried it. It is sluggish and has a
disappointing sound compared with the doubletalk, but hey, it
works! What it does best is to identify phrase boundaries and use
good intonation when processing normal text. In fact that is
pretty impressive. But it is not what most blind computer users
will appreciate in daily use.

More later

Chuck

BTW -- Thomas Ward is also struggling with what appear to be the
same issues as I have encountered, except Thomas is starting with
the binaries that come with the Redhat 8.0 distribution. With
Slackware you must (or at least I had to) begin with the sources
for everything and compile compile compile.

What screen reader are you going to be using for GUI?

Hi Scott,

I want to use gnopernicus, which is still under development. The
latest word is that the current version of the speech component
of gnopernicus is broken and it will be a few weeks until it is
fixed. Meanwhile it has braille and magnification which evidently
work, although I have no braille device and magnification would
be of no use here.

devices does the Developmental version support as far as braille output is
concerned? Does it support PowerBraille braille displays? Also, one huge
component is whether it supports any kind of Grade II translation.

Hi Erik

Here are two excerpts from the Gnopernicus web site home page:

----------
   Braille devices supported

   DM80p, VARIO, VARIO20, VARIO40, VARIO80, ALVA 544
----------
Braille component

The Braille component is a SO (shared object) which accepts input in
BML (Braille Markup Language, a XML dialect developed at Baum) and
many known Braille devices (currently just a couple of Baum devices
are supported). Braille is a medium, which allows a non-sighted person
to read text by touch, is also a method for writing tactile text. This
component makes a translation from a screen object in to the readable
Braille code set. The braille code is physically presented as raised
dots, usually arranged in cells of up to 6 dots. The module can be
configured from a Gnopi user interface.
----------

That's about all I can tell you about the braille side of it. No
mention anywhere of grade 2 translation.

Chuck

Hi, you can use emacspeak with festival lite called flite. You'll have to
compile the flite drivers, and then download and compile the flite server.

As for the gnopernicus/gnome access stuff I am working on my own
documentation as well as beta testing on a Red Hat 8.0 system.

So I'll let people know when I find out why gnopernicus isn't talking. Tjhe
gnome magnifier seams to be working fine it is the gnome-speech libraries
that appears broken. At least from what I've seen.
