It appears that the bug that has been discussed on this list with dectalk reading words with embeded numbers next to a letter
is a Dectalk bug itself, but speakup seems to be triggering it.
I haven't had it in a day of playing with asap, but speakup gets it all the
time.
The bug with speakup not speaking apostrophees correctly is a speakup bug. from what little
i've tried to hack on this, their is something going on
with punctuation spacific handling for the dectalk in speakup.c.
i'm not even going to try to guess what it does, since i'll probably get it all
wrong.

If we can't look at ourselves, and ask, why?
then where does the learning start?

Well, I do think the bug in 2 consecutive punctuations causing a word to be
spelled is actually a Dectalk cause. However, in the mixed numbers/letters
case, I agree that Speakup is the only screen-reader where I've experienced
this. While I am certainly not a programmer, I used Vocal-eyes and Jaws over
10-years--and both have pronunciation dictionaries. Since Speakup is one of
the only screen-readers not to have a dictionary other than for typing
charictors.
Speakup and Jupiter have been the only ones I've used while in Linux for going
on 1-year. I would love to tryYASR or even try-and run Vocaleyes through
dosemu

There is a 2.4.24 build of speakup for sarge on an iso in the speakup ftp
directory that's ftp.linux-speakup.org/debian/sarge. Well, that's all in
the pub directory. This image is out of date because I know there is a
deb available of a 2.4.27 speakup kernel. I once saw a more recent
speakup enabled kernel available on floppy somewhere on the debian ftp
site but can't seem to find it again. This file is probably not the
latest speakup kernel but is later then you would get on the iso. If
someone knows where debian keeps it's images for the speakup boot floppies
please post that info.
All the speakup kernels I mentioned use a cvs version of speakup which I
haven't found show-stopper bugs with.
