Hello,
Can anyone recommend some decent antivirus software for Linux? Also,
can anyone recommend some way that I can get courier to scan incoming
mail for viruses? thanks much.

Probably the best thing for you to use, is
MailScanner.
and it can be found at
mailscanner.info
MailScanner can scan all incoming mail for spam and viruses before it ever
gets to the mail client.
I use it and it works very well.

In case anybody wants to know, both mailscanner and clamav come as debian
packages. Mailscanner takes apparently some work to set up, and apparently
there's some problem with an upgrade the package doesn't support if you
use the debian package.

I've had problems with clamav wrongly detecting viruses. it says that
the dosemu freedos binaries are infected with some dos virus but when
scanned with norton corporate under winblows it doesnt find anything.

No! Cheryl the first part of your message is not true.
MailScanner takes no time at all to set up. It comes pretty much ready
to go off the shelf. If you need to make changes to the configuration,
it is perhaps one of the most well documented conf file that I have ever
seen, and therefore easy to tweak. Additionally, the MailScanner writer,
and mail list are fabulous in helping anyone with their problems in
getting it up and running. I say this from first hand experience. Dr.
Fielding, the author of MailScanner, help me personally when I was
having problems getting MailScanner up and running the first time. Even
though, in the end, the problem was not MailScanner, but instead
sendmail.
Be careful making such sweeping statements when they are not true.

I recognize the exim seems to be the default choice on Debian
installations. However, I took exim out in favor of sendmail because
exim failed the security test from:
telnet cygnus.mail-abuse.org
I don't want to contribute spam by being a possible unwitting relay
agent.
Please note, this was my experience last year about this time. Your
mileage may vary and, indeed, things might have changed with exim.

Hi. I just ran the test at cygnus.mail-abuse.org and my exim passed
with no problems. I'm running exim 3.361 on Debian unstable.
Thanks for the link since I didn't know of an easy way to confirm my
setup was working ok.

Glad to hear exim is working as it should now. At the time I had my
problem I could find no way to configure exim that would avoid the
problem mail-abuse reported. And, I was up live.

Hmm, actually I'd been hearing about security holes in sendmail, but I'm
afraid at this point I don't have any of the info I received to share with
you. That has probably been about a year ago also.
But your point is well taken, Janina; will look into it.

Cheryl, you are so right. The difference, I think, is how quickly these
holes are patched. The mail-abuse site is one very easy way to test your
MTA against some common exploits.

I've found it easy to setup.
I don't do the director and router thing because I happen to think
they're not necissary for home use.
all you need is 2 exim config files
and a modification to /etc/cron.d/exim to reflect the outgoing config
file
and you're away.
if you don't want to be able to have muas evaide the queue add the
director and router configs as shown in the docs. or in the case of
exim4, just add the defir router at the top of the routers list.

www.MailScanner.info has excellent documentation on how to configure
MailScanner with a number of different MTA's including exim.
If you like, I can share my different config files with you, so that you
can see how I have done things. I am using postfix, but the
configuration is vary similar for both exim and postfix.
Let me know if you want my configs and I will send them on to you.

Are you aware if it actually works with mailman also? I don't really
