dhcp help requested

	Hello Speakup friends,

Well I'm temporarly using my work E-mail address until I get my cable 
connection working. Therefore I have a question regarding the Debian Potato 
installation. I'm using the disks off the ftp site and from what I can tell 
I get to the point where I'm to configure the network, but I'm having some 
problems. I have a cable connection whcih uses dhcp and from what the cable 
company tellss me they don't support anything but windows, but well gee 
does this surprise anyone, however, there are folks using Linux with their 
service. This leads me to believe their dhcp implementation is normal so 
all should work.
I have a 3com card its an older isa 10mbps model that uses the 503 driver. 
When the module was installed there were no errors and if you type ifconfig 
it gives me some basic info about the card like the irq and so on. Of 
course it does not provide any ip or other info as one hasn't been assigned 
to it. So I let the installer run pump to obtain the ip address and so on 
automatically and it returns a message after about 20 seconds or so stating 
the configuration failed. I can't get any useful information as to why it 
failed. I tried running pump by hand to see if anything of value would come 
from it and yet nothing. Does anyone have any suggestions I might try? It 
appears as far as I can determine that the cable connection is working or 
so all the lights on the cable modem would indicate this and the network 
card worked fine previously in this box when I had dsl.

dhcpcd and there is another one, but if I remember correctly potatoe
had dhcp problems -- hhow about woody?

Hi, Scott.  In my area, Comcast uses client identifier instead of the MAC
address of the network card to get an IP.  Comcast tech support calls it
"your computer name."  This isn't the host name of your system, it's a
string sent by your DHCP client.  It's been a long time since I used
them, so I'm not completely sure, but I don't think pump would let me
send the string.  Dhclient and dhcpcd did work for me.

Ay John,

I used the woody disks that Frank cooked up and had the same results. Gene 
said there was something incorrect with the woody disks and he suggested I 
use the Potato disks. Oddly enough I got the same error from the woody 
disks,b ut I don't think pump was the program on the disk. I actually 
couldn't figure out what was being used, but to find out I'll have to start 
over. Why is this so damned difficult.

Hi.  The Woody disks on the speakup sight don't have the corect kernel config
to use DHCP.  If you need DHCP for the install, you will have to use the
Potato disks.  There have been some people working on updating the Woody
disks, but I haven't seen anything about it lately.

Hi, John.  The Woody disks have definite problems with DHCP.  If I
remember corectly, the only option during the install of Potato is to
use pump.  Woody switched to using dhcclient, but the kernel config on
the speakup Woody disks isn't setup for DHCP.

Ay Kenny, Adelphia apparently uses the mac address of the cable modem. I 
need to check to be sure they got that and if this is the case I then 
probably should make sure I know what is to be transmitted if anything.

Folks I spoke to a friend of mine and he had a similar problem and it was 
the 3com 503 card. It apparently had something to do with the driver for 
the card not being able to I think transfer something that the dhcp server 
wants. I may try loading another module for the other card in the box which 
is a pci card. I'm also going to call the cable folk and find out more info 
on the dhcp server.

There are other issues with cable BB services, including they tieing a
mac address to the given ip address or that particular outlet.  Now I
ask if you used this card before, do they know this mac address, do
you have to go on to their site under your service account of some
sort to set your own things including your mac address...   things
like that.  I think it's common to be able to specifiy several on the
assumption that some have domestic networks.  I have one of the D-link
DI604 routers which carries out a lot of this for us and we didn't
have connection problems with either of the Linux boxes going through
it.

2.4.x release, possibly 2.4.22. I could do it, but don't know when I would
get around to doing so...

You probably should look at the config for the current debian disks. that

Actually the mac address is in the modem so it shouldn't be the card and 
they wouldn't knwo anything about my hardware as this is new service. I 
previously had dsl with a static ip so dhcp is new to me as far as using 
it, but I do understand teh concept, but there's more stuff to check out 
yet. Thanks for the info and hope soon to be online. I'm actually using or 
trying to use one of my Linux boxes as a firewall/router instead of 
purchasing a router and hope that will never be necessary.<grin>

What does everyone think of using 2.2.25, and just using oldconfig for the
old potato 2.2.18 disks, since I've heard they work great. I'll probably
fill the kernel a bit more, or do you guys think modules are more
appropriate.

There are Debian Woody boot floppies with 2.2 kernels, but the speakup
Woody floppies have always used a 2.4 kernel.
