Hi all,
I just got a new pc to run linux on. Unfortunately, it only has one serial
port. I like to have both my dectalk express and powerbraille 40 running,
but they both require serial ports.
Does anyone know of a usb-to-serial converter that works with linux? I found
a belkin converter, but they only have windows drivers for it.
Any thoughts?

This page shows supported usb-serial adapters.

Note that not all of the devices listed are supported
under linux, look for the status column, and look for
"fully supported" (small_green.gif). Then select the
show link for more info on that particular device.

Might it not be easier (not to mension cheaper), to get a second serial
port? Many mother boards already have the support for them, and all you
need is a header for the back of the PC.
For those that do not, I believe you can still get serial expansion boards
(they usually also have parallel ports, etc., attached as well).

Hi, the belkin usb to serial convertor works great with Linux.
You just need to have all the proper modules compiled for your kernel and
loaded. Off the top of my head I know you need the standard USB driver, USB
serial support, and I think there was another one.
At anyrate the kernel docs has all the information stating what you need to
get your USB to serial convertor working.
However, getting speakup to recognize that non-standard serial port might be
another matter. I don't have speakup on my Linux computer at this time to
try it out. I'm using a different screen reader at the moment which works
fine with the USB serial convertor.

Hi. Why not shop around for an extra serial card?
You have no gaurantee that the USB stuff will work with BRLTTY, and it
definitely will not work with Speakup. Second serial cards don't cost
all that much. The only problem might be that you don't have an open
slot for the card.
