Hello all,
I am running Slackware 9.1 with Speakup 1.5 using my Braille Blazer as a
synthesizer. I, however, am having multiple issues with it. For one
thing, when too much text gets sent over the serial port, it turns
itself off and back on, which destroys my punctuation/pitch settings (I
can fix the pitch and speed, though). My second problem is
Speakup-related. I've seen it in Speakup 1.0, 1.5, and CVS speakup
(which, might I add, made my blazer sound quite weird). This problem is
that it does not announce uppercase letters in a higher pitch than
lowercase ones. This has also happened when using my Braille Lite 40 as
a synth. I've tried a warm reset, and that didn't help. Sometimes it'll
say some letters higher when spelling a word, but I think it doesn't
just do the uppercase ones in that case, it's hard to tell. Case
sensativity works in JAWS for DOS, BTW.
I'm looking into getting a DoubleTalk LT, so I won't have to worry about
these problems anymore. Either that, or possibly getting a TrippleTalk
USB and using its serial port, would that work with speakup? Any
suggestions to fix these annoying issues would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Garrett

get an artic transport. they're good synths and can stand up to a good
amount of abuse.

I've seen the problem of the blazer resetting itself when too much
text is sent to it with speakup 1.00, and with 1.5. Speakup is the
only screen reader I've seen this problem with, both provox and
window-eyes work fine.
As for the pitch not changing in the bns driver for lower and upper
case, I've found that I need to make a change in one of the speakup
files (I.E. /proc/speakup/volume, /proc/speakup/punct ETC.), and then
the voice lowers for upper case, and comes back to normal for lower
case, which is the opposite of how it's normally done, but there is
case change indication at least.

50 bucks...are they worth it? I mean, how's the speech, compaired to a

Sort of subjective, but if their anything like the 215s, they're only
slightly better than a sounding board, which is to say, pretty sucky.

Hi:
Well, I didn't have a huge opinion of the accent speech before I got given
an accent PC. Now I really like it. so don't let first impressions put
you off - cheapness is a good insentive for geting used to a synth.

This is the first I have heard of either of these behaviours. How is
the blazers handshaking set? How is it's speech box mode set? Has
anyone seen this behaviour on the BNS or is it a Blazer specific
situation?
You can always change caps_start and cap_stop to behave the way you
want it to. Have it say "cap" for instance or "upper" or fiddle with
the pitch settings to get it right for you.

wondering how much the accents are? One more tthing, I've heard stories of
synths being several hundred dollars, so are we like only concentrating on
low level synths, or have I just been misinformed?
Take care,
Sina

If any one wants to sell me a transport for $50.00, I'll buy it right
now!!!
I can pay cash, pay pal, or any other way you care to imagine...
Seriously, it is a decent synth especially for laptop use...
I would preferr a dectalk express, but I cannot find one of those for a
reasonable price either...
so, I am looking...

Hey, can I jump in here and cry "Me too!"? I would settle for a Transport or
a Doubletalk either one is fine. I too would want to do a laptop thus the
Accent SA is much too big for such a project.

When using speakup, I've got the blazer set to hardware handshake,
although setting it to software instead makes no difference as far as
the reset problem is concerned.
Not sure what you mean by "How is it's speech box mode set". If you
mean which port is it set to speak input from in the speech menu, the
answer is serial. I have seen the reset problem described happen only
with a blazer, I have never experienced it with a bns.

If any one wants to sell me a transport for $50.00, I'll buy it right
now!!!
I can pay cash, pay pal, or any other way you care to imagine... Seriously,
it is a decent synth especially for laptop use... I would preferr a dectalk
express, but I cannot find one of those for a
reasonable price either...
so, I am looking...

I have been fiddling with these settings, and only achieved some
success. This behavior has occured my Braille Lite. I'm planning to
have the blazer print what's sent through the serial port, including
Control chars, when JAWS for DOS does case switching, since that
implementation works...On Thu, Jan 15, 2004 at 06:57:36AM -0500, Kirk
