I'm using speakup on a laptop until I can get the hang of it, and noticed
there's a fair bit of functionality missing from the laptop keybindings.
Specificly, there's no mention of the ability on a laptop to turn off cursor
tracking for things like web browsing, or when using Alsamixer. Of course
it's also just as likely I haven't got a clue, but the documentation doesn't
make it entirely too obvious, nor does my generally playing around, although
it did get me used to speakup's keyboard layout where laptops are concerned.
Can someone enlighten me on how things like that work on laptops?

Try the FN-key; it's for emulating the numpad on a laptop.

How would that work, exactly? Documentation over there's not very clear on
that subject either. Is it the same as the caps lock + z? If so, I still
can't find the cursor tracking option. Sorry for playing 20 questions, but
I'm still figuring my way around its inner workings... The machine's only
been talking for less than 24 hours.

No, not the Speakup+z key.. I'm talking of the FN-key, which is in most
cases located
right from the left control key.
Holding this key and using the keys arround "j, k, l" "u, i, o" etc,
emulates the keystrokes of the numpad.
For more details check out the documentation of your laptop.

On the Laptop:
Caps+8 is Paste, but is the NumLock key on the Desktop keypad.
Caps+9 is Mark and Cut.
Caps+0 should be the Cursor Tracking toggle but is unassigned.
Caps+Minus is Park and Unpark.
Paste on the Laptop config can't duplicate the keypad's keys on
the desktop because many of them require the CapsLock key that's being
used already on the laptop's alpha keys. Desktop Keypad star and dash
might be assigned to laptop Equals and Backspace, respectively for the
Goto and Hex functions. Q, W, E, A, S, D, Z, X, and C could be used
for Caps+number combinations used on the Desktop keypad.
Caps+/ on the laptop should be Cursor Position, and not char color, and
Caps+V should be Char color. Caps+Enter on the laptop is unassigned,
but should be like Caps+Enter on the Desktop keypad. Not sure of the
rest of the laptop keys, but that seems to cover things. HTH,
Michael

there are 2 common leyaouts for fn keypads, and it varies more between
machines.
both have a numberpad centered around the i key. hold the fn key and pres
the following for fun times:
123=jkl
456=uio
789=789
m is insert, period is delete.
fn / is usually numpad slash,
the star can be on fn-0 or fn-8 depending on laptop.
fn ; and fn p are plus and minus.
there is a document in speakups docs dir called defaultkeymap this is worth
a read through.

Hello James,
You are correct! Somehow the key binding has been lost in speakup.
Whether you are using a laptop or desktop with full keyboard, the speakup-9, speakup-0 and speakup-<dash> should mirror the functionality of the numeric keypad top-row keys.
Perhaps the maintainers can take alook at where this was lost and see about putting it back?
You mentioned other lack of functionality? What is missing?
thanks,

I don't have the docs up in front of me right at this moment, but I've
noticed a few things listed that don't have laptop equivalents. Cursor
tracking is one such, but I remember seeing a couple more. I'll be more
specific when I can sit down with the documentation again.
