	Can linux successfully boot a speakup kernel with it's synth not attached?
I might be running some systems for a job some day that I might put speakup
on and use my dectalk express, so that a/b switches can be used to switch
control from one machine to another. If these machines use cron to reboot
some time late at night, will they come online again without the
synthesizer, as I'd not be looking forward to having someone have to help
me flip the switches as each machine comes up, or to even have to go in to
connect the synth to make them reboot?

That's one of the problems I have with the server that I run. I put
speakup 0.08 on it so that it would come back up if I needed to reboot,
but then again most of the time there's really no reason to reboot really.

I have booted a machine with speakup installed (using Doubletalk
synth) and booted a number of times without the synth attached. I didn't
notice any difference in the boot. (I am sighted my roommate isn't.) The
one thing I noticed is that attaching the synth didn't seem to cause it to
start speaking. But I didn't play arround and there may be a way around
that too. I simply rebooted to make it speak.

Was this the litetalk or the doubletalk?
If the litetalk wonder why mine won't boot when the synth isn't connected.

I believe, if it doesn't speak after you plug in synth, you could press
insert+enter several times to get kernel restart the Doubletalk synth.

Nada.  don't think so.  The way I understand it, and I'm surprised Kirk
hasn't commented on this yet, is that currently speakup will only load IF
the synth is detected at boot-up.  If it is not, speakup is bi-passed for
the entire session.  What you say WILL work IF the synth is detected, then
becomes unavailable later and is then re-attached.

Having said all that, the mods set for speakup development which would see
the ability to load synth modules should solve this one.

The modules idea will stink too, as then we'll need sighted assistance to
install linux. Especially if the synth were dumb enough to speak something
like, put changes to sendmail config in /etc/sendmail.config even though
it's really sendmail.cf, or other abbreviations that expand out, like etc.

Of course, if they do reboot, they do it at night, when nobody's usually
their anyway. It looks like I'm going to have to convince the admin to
allow the shutdown to upgrade from redhat 5.2 to 6.2, wouldn't have to if
speakup worked with 2.0.6x kernels that came with that distro. That
probably should've been done long ago, but maybe that's just the CD he has
for installing linux on systems now. I wonder if things could be done by
telnet, so all it'd take is a reboot. I could probably dig up speakup 0.08
off the ftp site, I used to use it at home with no problems.

Yeah, as far as I know speakup didn't support the litetlk til 2.2.7 which
was a problem for slackware 4.0, but I got around this by having the
install work over serial port so I could login off of the serial port from
a dos machine.

Can't really do that, would need it to load support for speech, and not use
it unless speech is connected. Is there "dummy dectalks" that'll tell linux
a dectalk is there, but it's really not, just to make it boot? I really
don't feel like getting another one, and going through the hastles of
applying for grants and stuff from the employer to get it, probably would
have use of it faster bringing the one I use with my laptop, as I wouldn't
use both at once, separately.

Kirk, perhaps you could add some kernel switch to start Speakup in a mute
mode? DO you think it is possible?

PS I believe, one could try to use some kind of lookback cable to trick
Speakup into thinking that there is a synth.
