I have tried getting zipspeak to run on my machine, and it seems to not
recognize my USB keyboard.
My PS/2 ports seem to be out of commission, so that is not an option.
I do have USB set to work in my BIOS, so does anyone have any other
suggestions for getting zipspeak to work with a USB keyboard? The reason I
believe it is the keyboard is that I cannot type anything after I type Linux
at the DOS prompt.
Thanks.

Forget zipspeak, go with zipslack instead.

grab the latest version of zipslack, unzip it on your machine, anc
copy a speakup kernel from the kernels/ directory on the same site you
got zipslack frome.

I read the readme_1st file before downloading thezipspeak.zip file. After extracting zipspeak.zip to D: and then rebooted to the command prompt only. I switched to D: and ran the Linux.batfile. My DECTalk Express talked alot of information and an error then just sat. How can I save all this information and the error to a text file?

The only thing I can think of is that you forgot to edit the linux.bat file.
for instructions, see d:\zipspeak\zipspeak.txt, or the comments inside the
linux.bat file. your line should look something like:
\loadlin\loadlin \linux\vmlinuz root=/dev/hda2 speakup_synth=dectlk rw
Also, Zipspeak 8.1 will be released very soon, and will fix some bugs with
8.0.

Hi there Angus buddy!
Correct me if I am wrong, however; if memory serves me correctly which
it seldomly does, I seem to remember you were planning to dual boot a
machine on which disk space wasn't exactly at a premium, so if my
assumptions are correct why not just look at installing a full distro,
I.E., Slackware, Debian, or Red Hat. Just a thought. Ed Barnes

I was thinking of a full Debian install. If I remember correctly, Until I learn Linux commands I can then do a full install. This desktop has a 30GB HD, and my laptop has limited space. The HD on the laptop has Corel Linux 1.1 andnow needs a new screen.

Hi.
You should add the following line to your linux.bat file. It clears disk
buffers.

I just got ZipSpeak 7.1 unzipped on my system, and I'm eagerly awaiting
some Windows tasks to finish running so I can shut down and kick the tires.
However, I'm curious as to ZipSpeak's limitations.
I've got a Smart And Friendly 2x2x24x cdr-w drive connected to my pc via a
scsi expansion card. Will ZipSpeak see this drive?
Thanks, and have a happy holidays!

Hi, Jason. Personally, you are much better off going with a full blown
distribution such as Red Hat 7.2.
There are quite a few limitations with Zipspeak that should be addressed.
At the last I knew of it doesn't support /proc. This means if you try to
upgrade to Speakup 1.0 you will not be able to change voice rate, pitch, and
all of that. As well as many other /proc settings you might want.
Also I was never able to get X going under Zipspeak so that other family
members could use Linux with gui which didn't go over well with them. They
like to use Gnome, and I was able to do that much easier under Red Hat 7.2.
Also if you ever get interested in Vmware which allows you to run Windows
under Linux it requires a working x server. Which was easy enough to get
going with RH 7.2.
While you can get just about any app to run under Zipspeak it was easier
just getting a full distribution which has just about anything you want on
the cd already. It is known to work with the distribution, is precompiled,
and there is less to download.
That is unless you download the distribution, and that is pretty big.

Well, ZipSpeak will work fine for me right now, since this is my first use
of any form of linux system. My programming isn't good, and I've only got a
single, small hard drive for my Windows. I plan on adding another drive to
my system sometime, and then I'd upgrade to a full version of some form of
linux. Thanks for the advice, though. I'll keep it in mind when I'm able to
take that next step.

Personally Jason I'd stick with Zipspeak. It's an easy way to get started.
But I'd be shocked if you were still using Zipspeak at Christmas 2002 - it's
a good way to get started and eventually you will move on.

Sure. That sounds good. Zipslack the parent version of Zipspeak was my first
version too. However, after learning the basics I moved up to a full
distribution.
Just let us know of any problems you have and we will try and help you out.

Hi:
bruce, can you enlighten us by telling us which distribution you are trying
to install? I'd guess zipspeak from what you've said, but it might well be
something else, and diagnosing the problem is going to depend on us knowing
which it is.
Geoff.
