Hi all. I've come to decide with my current state of hearing, probably
the only software speech I feel I can use is neo speech. Any potential
for having that type of voice for the things we like to run? Or, if I
can't have that, there is still dectalk which I do fine with. Can one
still get software dectalk? Thanks much.

For Linux? That would truly be cool.

The "open version" of DEC Access32, is available from GW Micro for $75.

VoiceWare's digitized human speech speech engine, Kate and Paul are the female and male voices respectively.

That deal from GW Micro will *NOT* run under linux. Fonix at
www.fonix.com did sell Software DECTalk for linux as a run time module
for $50.00.

Beware however, their website is loaded with javascript and won't accept
text browsers <yuck>. Guess I'm gonna have to start messing with the UI
string in elinks to get past these bozos. My elinks is configured for
JS and yet these sites insist my browser doesn't support JS; I don't
think so. Sorry for the digression.

Does Neospeech run on Linux? The demo piece sounds comparable with
"AT&T Natural Voices" and "ScanSoft RealSpeak", but perhaps those don't
do Linux (I have them running here on Windows).

I'm curious. Have you tried eSpeak ( http://espeak.sourceforge.net ) ?
I'd be interested to hear how it compares with a modern commercial
synth for someone with hearing difficulties, for the purpose of
intelligibility. Its speech isn't as natural as the commercial synths
of course, but that's not necessarily the same as intelligibility.

That's a good point. In fact, I was thinking about that on the bus on the
way home last night. Somebody told me that they'd heard the new voice for
Voiceover for the Mac and it sounded very human. It blew him away, he said.
But that guy isn't blind.

That's what got me thinking. 80% of the time I use JAWS and Windows. The
other 20 is speakup and a hardware synth. The default JAWS voice is quite
nasally. You can select voices that sound more natural but they're not as
clear.

In fact, when people want to make sure they're understood, they usually
speak in an unnatural tone. So I take it that you wrote espeak with
intelligibility in mind rather than trying to make it sound "real". If so,
you've done a good job.

When I first used Espeak, I really wondered what I might be getting
into. It sounded awkward but now I'm so used to it that I think little
of the slight British accent applied to some words and all that. I now
run it about as fast as it will go:).

Along the lines of dectalk speech, does anybody know where to
download the dectalk software. I had purchased dectalk-5.0 and
eventually lost it, but the link in the email fonix sent me doesn't
seem to be working any more.

Unfortunately, espeaks won't cut it for me at this point, nor will the
other thing that sounds like eloquence. Maybe with a laptop I'll need
to use the reliable doubletalk lt, which I can certainly do, or move my
dec express from desk to lap, but I'm hoping to keep things still kind
of portable.

I know this is OT, but speaking of the Mac, one can also now use
acapela (spelling may be wrong) voices with voiceover; they aren't
through Apple so it is an extra cost. I haven't heard that they can
be used with linux.

I ask, as I will be visiting and working there for the next few days, and
would not mind a first hand look at another person's Linux setup.
Thanks,
