Hi all.
I posted to macvoiceover about my success in getting a dual boot with a ppc
mac mini with brltty, though with an unofficial cd since the necessary
changes in brltty haven't made it into the official testing images yet. I
got some inquiries back, some asking about speakup. I haven't tried using
speakup in ppc yet, though I did try using espeak, which installs but
doesn't speak and gives an error about bad data; I read that it could be
compiled to get rid of the error but then still didn't speak. There actually
is a version of espeak that works on the macosx end, though it isn't
incorporated to work with voiceover at this point. at any rate, can anybody
tell me whether speakup works on a ppc installation, specifically debian but
others also if applicable, and if there's any iso installation media at
present for ppc that has speakup?
tia.

I do see that while I can't get espeak to work, festival and flite both do
work on my ppc linux installation.

I have no problem with trying to work on a speakup-enabled ppc kernel. My
only problem is that my system boots with yaboot, which isn't accessible in
the sense that I can't tell when it loads. that's not ordinarily a big
problem; the problem is that if i have a regular kernel and an experimental
kernel that's speakup-enabled, I don't think I'm going to be able to tell
when grub loads so I can arrow down to the kernel I want. I could just keep
changing the default kernel in menu.lst but if I ever get stuck in a
non-loading kernel I might not be able to get back to the menu.lst file to
change the default back. If I can solve this problem, I might consider
working on a speakup kernel compile.

Cheryl,
In my grub menu.lst, I search for lines starting with the word 'title'
in the first column,
then add a control G just before the capital D on that line, in the
word 'Debian'.
That makes a bell sound when the grub menu appears and when it changes.

Actually, I misspoke; since I'm using yaboot I don't have grub. tried the
ctrl-g with yaboot and it didn't work but I don't think pc speaker works for
me anyway.
I tried to compile the 2.6.24 kernel but had problems with keyboard; haven't
figured out whether or not the problem is speakup-related or something else.
I also will have to dig up info on software speech if I decide to try to get
speakup going; it's been a long time since I did this. I insgtalled
speech-dispatcher but then uninstalled it when I discovered that orca quits
talking when the speech daemon is running. Eventually I'll put it back on
and not let it run automatically.

If your machine supports pc speaker at that stage you can insert a ^G at the end of the title line in grub stanzas and as you move from one to the next it will beep. Let's say for example you put a ^G on the first one but not the second or third then you have a clue where you are. Like I said this is machine dependent. I don't believe there was a serial port on the mini so it would be improbable to get serial console support working. I guess if the bios supported serial over usb this may be possible. If this wasn't your only machine I'd say you could use a pxe boot loader and tftp the images off another machine. Then you would know what image you were pulling all the time. If I find some time I will have a read through the docs on the bios and yaboot to see if I see any other options.

There is no installation support for sure. Long ago and far away, maybe during the 2.4 days, a few of us were playing with trying to get ppc to work. I don't even remember what we came up with. I haven't touched a ppc box in many years now. Well I should say there is one exception, my snom. And if we ever get custom firmware built for the snom we may need speakup. Now that you have a debian install on your ppc you should have a go at building a speakup kernel. That is if you aren't worried about getting your hands dirty. If you have any trouble along the way just speakup.
