I recall seeing this on this list a ways back but can't find it now.
How does one specify the user and password for an outbound SMTP connection
for Pine? I can see how to specify the user but password seems to not be a
valid /option. I keep getting either "cannot authenticate 535" or "invalid
specifier".
Any ideas?
Thanks.

I could not figure that out either. I let my sendmail program do
the authentication.

Well, this is a win2k box here at the office. I dropped in pcpine so I
could get away from that God awful Outlook Xpress. We use Outlook 2k for
e-mail at the office but it won't work with IMAP so I think the only
programs I know of that do IMAP on winblows is pcpine and Outhouse
Distress!:). PC Pine is actually pretty good.

I just put the user name in, and just enter the password each time, but
this is using imap so I only have to do it once per session.
Cheers.

Pine has smtp validation? excilent, when you find out how to get it working
will you mail me with it?
I might switch over as smtp validation in mutt seems to be very difficult.

Ahh, but this is to a separate SMTP server for outbound only. It uses
a separate user/password pair. I use this at my office so I call home
to my IMAP server to get inbound mail but to send it out, I have to
use a separate mail server that I have access to. I had no trouble
doing this with outlook express but can't seem to get it done with
pc-pine. When I just supply the user string as in /user=id, I never
get prompted for a password. I wonder if pine is trying to use my
IMAP password over here on the SMTP box.
