Well, I guess this is more of a proceedural matter? Last several months, if I
reply to a message on this list, useing pine4.64 here on shellworld, I receive
a message back, saying, "your message is being held my the moderater for
approval" The message seemingly never gets posted. In pine, I have tried both
methods where it says "use reply to address instead of from" Anyway unless I
create a completely new message, I cannot reply to this list. I can still
reply to individuals This is the only list where this seems to be happening.
Thanks in advance
Hart

Remember that the message limit on this list is 5K in
size. Unfortunately, I have noticed that some people on here are still
failing to trim their replies. I am not pointing a finger at anyone
specifically here, I'm speaking in general, so no flames
please. Anyway, if your message is over the 5K limit, it goes to Kirk
for moderation. Since Kirk considers most of this stuff to be crap as
far as I can tell, and you don't specifically explain to him privately
why message so and so should get posted to the list, it won't be.
So, addressing your issue, I don't know if you trim your replies or
not, but if you don't, then maybe it's a good idea to consider getting
into the habit of doing so. If you are trimming your replies, then I'm
not sure why they would be sent for moderation, instead of coming to
the list directly right away.

Well, what do you know? I just too now got back a message saying one
of my posts was awaiting moderator approval due to too many
recipients. I'm not going to repost it, since I've seen answers to
what I was asking about from the time I sent it till now. However, I
do think it a bit strange to be holding posts just because they're
going to more then one address.

Strange, I just replied to this message, and answered "yes" to use
Reply-to in Pine. It only went to the list. However, I have had other
messages where using the reply-to address sends a message to the list, and
a CC to the original sender. If I don't notice this, the message gets
rejected. I don't have the slightest idea why this happens, unless it has
something to do with the way the particular user has their email client
configured.

Ok, I guess the best solution to all this might be to do what I am
doing. I never include the messages back in the post. I just put in
my message and let her fly. I have never had a problem.
Why should there be more than one recipient? The list machine, the
one at the University of Western Ontario is the only recipient. This
machine distributes the messages to all the list members. Just try
not including original messages and see if this stops. it.
Hope this helps.

Whether you include the original post or not, isn't the issue
here. When replying to some posts, in addition to the address for the
list, you also have the address of the original sender of the message
as well in the reply to field. Personally, I think this is a from
header misconfiguration on the part of whoever posted the message to
which you're replying. Incidently, if you chose to reply to just that
message, and not the entire list in this scenario, you'll get the list
address in the reply to field, instead of the original sender's
address. So, no, in this case, the message isn't just going to
speech.braille.uwo.ca.
The solution here is obvious, remove the original sender's address
from the reply to field, just leaving the list address. I personally
didn't bother doing that, since I don't see a big issue with the
sender getting my message twice, through the list, as well as
directly. However, now that I know this issue exists, I'll be taking
care to check the reply to field when sending a reply to a post from
this list, as well as other mailman lists I guess, since I imagine the
problem isn't unique to this list.

This is where mutt shines. It is the only mailer I know of that allows
for a special "List reply" function. Just do a shift L and no matter
how the list is configured, mutt will code the reply as a single message
to the list and to noone else.
