I read the readme_1st file before downloading thezipspeak.zip file. After extracting zipspeak.zip to D: and then rebooted to the command prompt only. I switched to D: and ran the Linux.batfile. My DECTalk Express talked alot of information and an error then just sat. How can I save all this information and the error to a text file?

The only thing I can think of is that you forgot to edit the linux.bat file.
for instructions, see d:\zipspeak\zipspeak.txt, or the comments inside the
linux.bat file. your line should look something like:
\loadlin\loadlin \linux\vmlinuz root=/dev/hda2 speakup_synth=dectlk rw
Also, Zipspeak 8.1 will be released very soon, and will fix some bugs with
8.0.

Hi.
You should add the following line to your linux.bat file. It clears disk
buffers.
smartdrv /c

Hi there Angus buddy!
Correct me if I am wrong, however; if memory serves me correctly which
it seldomly does, I seem to remember you were planning to dual boot a
machine on which disk space wasn't exactly at a premium, so if my
assumptions are correct why not just look at installing a full distro,
I.E., Slackware, Debian, or Red Hat. Just a thought. Ed Barnes

I was thinking of a full Debian install. If I remember correctly, Until I learn Linux commands I can then do a full install. This desktop has a 30GB HD, and my laptop has limited space. The HD on the laptop has Corel Linux 1.1 andnow needs a new screen.

You should put smartdrv /c right before the line that loads linux. It
really doesn't matter, as long as it's before that line.

Angus:
Not sure how many Linux commands you will need to know so to speak to do
a Debian install because I've never done one, I'm running RH 7.2 over
here though an upgrade to 7.3 or a format and an installation of 7.3 is
imminant in my case.
You might also find it beneficial to take a listen to the Debian
installation audio tutorial put together by Matt Campbell as a part of
his "A Look At Linux" series which he did for ACB Radio's Main Menu. I
believe there are a copy of the two files on the speakup ftp tree though
you could probably find them in the ACB Radio archives at ACB Radio's
web site located at: http://www.acbradio.org

The files are in the dir
ftp://linux-speakup.org/pub/linux/goodies/audio-files/debinstall_1.mp3, and
debinstall_2.mp3.
I listened to them and they help a lot.

Have any of you experienced a zero suddenly appearing at the prompt when the
return is pressed?
This has happened on two different boxes, with two different burns of
RH7.3spk. The prompt looks like this:
[jondowd@localhost jondowd]$ 0
The most recent appearance of this behavior began about a half an hour after
the install. Wasn't happening at first, on the other computer it happens
sometimes and sometimes a reboot will fix it.
Thanks,
(btw, wvdial ROCKS ! Great software, hats off and many thanks to them !)

I notice this happens when you have the Numlock turned on. Turn it
off and things should be back to normal. We were talking about this
very same subject on the reflecter a while ago.

This is a numlock bug. It should only rear it's ugly head when you
have numlock on. It has been fixed in cvs though, well mostly
fixed. 'grin'

Aah. I was wondering about that one, as I've seen it appear via numlock
when trying to use cdp for playing cd audio.
