new user with slackware questions

Hello, My name is Reinhard Stebner.  Here is what I am trying to do.  I am
installing Linux on a system that will only run Linux.  My question is this,
should I setup the main Linux partition first or the swap?

I only have about 800 megabytes on the system, and I want to install
slackware to be a server for my dorm room.  Linux will be the machine the is
hooked up to the wall, and all of my other computers will be hooked up to
it.  My first question is this, knowing I only have 800 meg of disk space,
what packages are required and witch ones can be throun out.  Thank you for
your help.

Next question, will speakup be available with braille display support?  Is
there a braille display program that can be run on a users account?  If so,
is there a autoexec.bat type of program that will allow boot up
instructions?

also, can I have both a modem and network card on the same machine?

Actually just check the a ap d e f k and n sections of the slackware install.
The t and tcl and y sets aren't really needed uless you want them.

It is best practice to first setup your Linux main partition and then take
care of the swap. Very of ten, you see people setting up several partitions
for Linux, but it is not necessary in home conditions.
So, just setup two primary paritions, one is of type 83, Linux native, and
another of type 82, Linux Swap.

I believe if you uncheck X-WIndow system, you should have enough space for
other important applications. If you would have additional 100MB, you could
simply install the whole Linux system, which is about 900MB.

I don't think Kirk has in any plans a Braille support. He can tell you more
about his plans. There is a very good program called BRLTTY will supports
multiple Braille displays and will run almost from the very start of your
computer. More information about BRLTTY can be found at www.leb.net/blinux.
Choose File Archive and then arrow to BRLTTY section.

If your only using the box as a firewall, you need very little. Its
actually recommended to only have what it takes to boot the box and in
that case a floppy would work.

If you plan to use this box as a router/firewall and server, you'll need
to decide what services you plan to run like ftp, http, telnet, will you
be using nfs at all, aand so on.

You can pretty much not bother with any X apps which will save you space
for sure, news readers and such unless you plan to telnet into the box to
read mail and so on, and there's like lots of other stuff you won't need.

Go through the packages during the instllation and look at each and decide
at that point. You can always add or remove what you don't want.

trying Emacspeak.

You will have to keep Sepakup and BRLTTY on different ports, which is
logical. They don't have any problems with each other. to Untar the .tar.gz
package, you do:

tar vxzf <file.tar.gz>

Please note, don't use the < and > signs.
After you untar the file, it will create the directory with a name
resembling the name of the .tar.gz file. Enter this directory and then look
through README files.

Does the letters show up during the install prosses?  I know that they are
on the webpage, but are they showing up in the install setion it self?

I will be using the box as a firewall as well as a router.  It is a little
early yet to see if I wanted to be a server.  It is slow (pent 75) and if I
do decide to go that rout, I will buy a faster machine.  So, I am going to
use the box for
1) a router
2) 1 firewall
3) a box to learn how to use Linux.

This is my first time installing Linux, and am finding it quite interesting.

My mager is Computer Science at Texas A & M.  I am currently a softmore.  I
would appreciate it if someone could tell me what each package does in the
main install menu (what each group of packages are for and how they are
used).  Thank you for your help.

Yes they do. What install method are you using? text.gz or color.gz?
If text.gz you just don't type the t andtcl disk sets in and if your using the color.gz should be called tex and tcl software or something like that.
Just don't  check those entries.
