Randy,
My latest upgrade was to a system with only PCI slots, and I
switched to using a Doubletalk Lite on a serial port.

Hi Randy. Well I'm not sure if Dectalk express synths can still be obtained, but if you happen to dig one up, just get a usb2serial converter. Or a serial female2male adapter if your serial port happens to be female like the one on my laptop is. Also, a question to the listers. I'm planning on possibly replacing winblows on my laptop with Debian. If I get a USB2serial converter and plug it into the right-most port for instance, would it be refered to as ttys0? Thanks!

i might be wrong on this
if i am someone please tell me.
thanks

A usb to serial converter won't do any good for talking to a serial
synth. The reason is that the i/o ports for the uarts are not the
same and we speak to the ports at a very low level. I am trying to
find time to include usb and pcmcia support.

Hi Kirk. I actually thought of that, but just wasn't sure if it was the
case. So could I do with a female-2-male serial converter instead? Just
asking because you just mentioned to me that a usb-to-serial wouldn't
work. Its a good thing I didn't go out and buy one before I read your post
grin!

Hmmmm, I thought someone on this list said a while back that they were able to run speakup with a bns and some other serial synth via such a converter.

Hi, Kirk. Well, I have had some success using a USB convertor so I know it
is possible.
However, this seams to work only with read hat, and I had to pass specific
options to speakup to get it work properly.

Hi Randy. Speakup doesn't need to use usb ports as far as I know, because
what you're esentially doing is putting a serial port in where a usb port
used to be. You're probably right in some extent here, because I'm not
sure whether even with a usb2serial converter Speakup would still use the
usb interface in some way. Can someone please enlighten either me or Randy
on this, because I am interested in this subject also, since I want to put
Debian on my laptop, and my serial port is a female port. And my dectalk
requires a male port, since my cable for the dectalk is a female
connector.

Well, the only way to find that out is to boot with the converter plugged in, and see what the kernel assigns it as. It doesn't matter what usb port it is plugged into, it just matters if it is the first one or not. Usb to serial converters are reffered to as /dev/ttyUSB0 and so on. For devfs, I believe the designations are /dev/usb/ttyS0 and so on, but I'm not sure about the devfs naming I just gave.
